Default Love, Simon (2018)

Quote:
Showrunner Greg Berlanti is in talks to direct Fox 2000’s “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.”

The project was set up last October with Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen at their Temple Hill company along with Pouya Shahbazian after Fox had acquired movie rights to Becky Albertalli’s coming-of-age novel.

Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker have adapted the script which follows a 16-year-old closeted gay student who is dealing with his secret being exposed after one of his personal emails falls into the wrong hands. The novel was published last year by HarperCollins.
An early 2017 start date is being eyed.

Sounds good but I'm kinda getting burnt out on these Fox Searchlight High School movies.

Nick Robinson was cast as the lead, but he hasn't had good luck with young adult adaptations so far (5th Wave, Everything Everything both flopped). I always wanted to read this book.

I enjoy a good teen movie and this looks really good. I mean I won't lie, it does look just a tad cheesy. Especially the end of the trailer. But it still looks really enjoyable.

I'm hoping it's a success. I want it to do well so we can get more mainstream movies with focus on gay characters. Honestly I would LOVE to see a Nic Sparks type of movie with two people of the same sex getting a wide release for Valentine's Day. One with two name actors or actresses. I think that would be awesome. A friend dragged me to Safe Haven on Valentine's Day one year and I couldn't help but think that and it has been my dream ever since .

This!! All of this. I’m really excited about this. Nick Robinson has been one of my crushes since Melissa and Joey and he’s my age. The film does look cheesy. But I’m here for something cute and kinda fluffy! Haha. I also really loved Safe Haven.

I didn't love Safe Haven but honestly, surprisingly, I didn't mind it. I was so against seeing it. I'd heard the twist and thought it sounded like the most hilarious, ludicrous thing ever. But I always pick the movies and my friend asked if I'd go with her so of course I said yes. Sparks movies always look beautiful. I'd love to see a gay romance get that treatment. No it wouldn't be high art but it would be nice just to have some well-done fluff.

That trailer kinda feels like Hollywood has just realised there are gay people.

This looks charming based on the trailer, but I'm leery due to Berlanti's involvement. His seemingly endless parade of generic superhero shows have not encouraged me to become a fan.

This isn't a superhero movie though so it should be different. I watch none of his superhero shows. Not my thing. But still looking forward to this.

Bought the movie tie-in book tonight at Target. Can't wait to read it. It looks like a quick read.

I would read the book but feel it will just ruin the movie for me so I'll just wait for the movie. Then maybe I'll give the book a read.

Yeah, but he also created the superior Everwood ages ago, which kick-started Chris Pratt's career. Give the movie a chance. Some friends and I saw it over the weekend. It's not perfect, but it's a great feel-good movie with some genuine laughs and heartfelt moments. The theater was more full than we expected for a St. Patrick's Day 9:00ish show with people of all ages, and there was actual applause at various times throughout. I love that Fox took the chance to actually front the money rather than waiting for a filmmaker to independently finance it then buy the distribution rights. It's a step in the right direction.

Finished the book last night. Loved it. After examining both trailers again, it makes me wonder if they're going to differ from the book.

A friend read the book after seeing the movie and said the book was terrible. They were happy they only used like 10% of the book. I find it hard to believe it's that little but I wouldn't expect it to be super faithful from the sound of it. They loved the movie and said all of the changes are for the best. So I'm waiting until after the movie to read the book or if I were to love the book I'd end up disappointed with the movie.
