So when films get loud, either music or effects, one of my surround speakers will randomly start screeching at a high pitch, very unpleasant. For 5.1 films I've had to disable the rear surrounds as the left was always screeching, and now the right forward surround screeches as well. Connections are all solid.
Am I simply playing them too loud for the power my little Onkyo puts out? I don't know if they're damaged, I sure hope not. I'm coming to dread watching anything new as modern action films and the like are very loud at the volumes I play them at. My Jamos were purchased pre-loved over three years ago, they've been fine till now... |

They are damaged. The culprit might be to much volume however if you've mismatched the speakers to the amp in a big way. You've blown the cones with simply too much power. How about listing the speakers & listing the amp...for others to quantify where the problem most likely emanated.

Well as you've remained quiet & I somehow didn't see your listed spec in your signature, first time around.
I've googled the Jamo E800's & the Onkyo tx-sr608. The speakers can handle 100w RMS with a peak of 140 (for a short burst), the amp states it fires out 160wRMS per channel. I think anyone can conclude the issue. Whoever advised you this was a good or reasonable thing to do is a pleb. |

Is the fact that I hear the screeching some times, but not others, a clue as to whether or not they're temporarily "protesting" or actually damaged? I think the overall quality of sound might have something to do with it as well. I turn it down for the rare occasions a disc is lossy, or for older films with less aggressive mixes.
Somehow I missed the 160w RMS in the Onkyo's blurb. I think that might only be for the two fronts? I had 2x Jamo 850 there and the tweeter or midrange went on one a couple years ago, so replaced it with the SF affairs. Been running this amp for three years now, forgotten most of the research I did. If I have screwed them, it's a shame but then again I did buy them used, so who knows how they'd been treated beforehand. This is my first HT rig. |

Just to make sure....is it both channels that have the issue? |

It's those two channels I mentioned, yes. It happens for quite a few loud films but not all of them, and not for every loud scene.
BR2049 BD is on the horizon. An extremely loud mix. Eh... ![]() I was thinking of going seperate for the amps and bi-amping the fronts at least, if not the surrounds and rear surrounds as well. Seems that might be a little ambitious for these tykes. |

Swap speakers out and play the same exact tracks that you ahve experinaced the screeching.. Could be the receiver, if it follows the channel.and not the speaker ..... |
