Default The Commuter (2018)

Quote:
In the midst of his daily commute, insurance salesman Michael Woolrich is contacted by a mysterious stranger who forces him to uncover the identity of a hidden passenger on the train before the last stop.
This is the fourth collaboration between Liam Neeson and Jaume Collet-Serra, after Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night.

I hope it's able to repeat the excitement of Non-Stop, not the derivativeness (is there such a word?) of Run All Night.

This sounds like an exact copy of Non-stop, which wasn't very good to begin with.

Neeson needs to cut ties with this director. Their collaborations have resulted in some of his worst movies.

Surely we can't be that close to January already?

Didn't mind Run All Night, but like all those other film, this is essentially Neeson-by-numbers.

All of these Liam Neeson action movies after the first Taken blend together for me, with the only standout being Common as Deadshot in Run All Night.

I've always liked that Collet-Serra is an unpretentious director who makes watchable enough B-movies. The one film of his I really enjoyed was Orphan, a nasty little horror flick with a genuinely surprising twist and top-notch performances (Vera Farmiga in particular).

Oh, yes. Like that one a lot. It doesn't involve criminals or mysteries on a mode of transport though.

The Shallows was bad, but I enjoyed the previous Neeson/Collet-Serra teams ups (Unknown and Non-Stop), so I'm down with this. Nice to see Vera Farmiga is in it, too.

I'll probably check this out, but after Non-Stop I'm keeping expectations in check.

I turned YouTube on the tv to watch some videos. The trailer for this popped up as an add. I let it play not carrying while surfing the internet on my tablet. I seen Liam Neeson, still didn't care. Then I seen Vera Farmiga, and now I really want to see this movie.

I love The Shallows and no, not just because Blake Lively spends 80-some minutes in a bikini. It's a tight little creature feature that doesn't waste any time messing around with irrelevant material. Stick Blake's character out on the buoy and have her have to figure out a way to survive a great white shark. And I thought it was executed very well. Also, the photography was gorgeous.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled Taken 14, I mean The Commuter.

Eh. I thought The Shallows was just okay at best. Kind of average, actually. I have nothing personal against Lively, but I saw people acting like she gave some kind of award-worthy tour de force performance and frankly I thought any number of actresses could have played the part just as well. Hardly a "born to play this role" situation like some would have you think. The cinematography was nice, although it got a little too annoyingly artsy for me at times. And oh my god, the ending! The ending was just terrible. It was honestly so ridiculous I almost burst out laughing.

I'm sure other actresses could have done as good of a job. But I don't think that's a criticism of Blake or of her performance. I think it's simply an expression of the fact that the role itself isn't something that's crazily dense. No one's asking her to play Liv Ullman's role in Persona or anything. OTOH, few women would look as good playing that role as Blake did.

As for the cinematography, I never found it annoying. Then again I have no idea what "artsy" really means when people use that word. I just don't understand it as a critique. Never have.

And I loved the ending.

The trailer is very promising. It seems to be a mystery thriller peppered with action, much like Collet-Serra's best film, Non-Stop.
