Default The last film by Jan Švankmajer: Insects (2018)

Totally missed out on this Indiegogo campaign:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/t...r-insects--4#/

Would've picked up the exclusive 5 film blu-ray box set . Hopefully it will get a wider release when the time comes because 3 of those films are in my top 10 DVDs that I want to see given the special treatment. There are still some good perks left if you're looking for an autograph.

Sad to hear this will be the last feature film. I'm sure he won't get the recognition he deserves until long after he's dead.

Quote:
“The civilization we live in has little interest in authentic artistic creation. What it needs is well-working advertisement, the iconographic contemporary art, pushing people towards more and more mass consumption.

It gets increasingly difficult to fund independent art that scrutinizes the very core of our society. Who would deliberately support their own critics? We make a film every five or six years not because of a lack of ideas, but due to the lack of funds to back up our projects. Crowdfunding may be the way to change this.” - Jan Švankmajer

The campaign is still going.

I'm glad to see Jan has one more left in 'im. I really enjoy Alice and Meat Love.

The $150 BD set is a little too steep for my blood, but it sure do sound nice. Yep.

I know... that's why I said there are still perks left. I missed out on it because the blu-rays are gone.

Edit: Looks like they added more box sets to the perks.

^ They were never sold-out. As far as I know the boxset will be up for grabs until the campaign ends.

$30 each is a pretty reasonable price, though, considering that it's an independent release and its exclusivity. If you're a huge Švankmajer fan and want nearly all his feature-films on Blu-ray, I think this perk is a no-brainer.

I sure hope they use Eva Švankmajerová's gorgeous posters for the cover-art! It's a shame neither the U.S. and U.K. BDs of Alice used her poster.

I guess that was why it said "SOLD OUT" yesterday when I posted this...... Or maybe it just said it on my internet, but I doubt it.

It also includes perks Larvae 1, 2 and Nymph 4.

For those interested, Švankmajer's social media/Indiegogo team uploaded Little Otik onto Vimeo, FREE to watch until July 30th. You'll need a Vimeo account I believe, but that's free as well.

Here's the link:
https://vimeo.com/ondemand/littleotik/172865632

There's only four days left for the Insects campaign, so if you want to contribute, do it soon!

If you missed out on the initial batch, the 5-film Jan Švankmajer BD collection is available again to purchase. You got until Feb. 19th (when the campaign closes for good) to place your order. It costs $170 + shipping.

Update from Jan Svankmajer:

Dear backers,

First, we have to apologize for the silence. The whole team had quite a lot of work with numerous exhibitions of Jan Švankmajer’s objects that took place mainly abroad.

We’ve sent a link to the film Insects to all backers who pledged for a perk containing the download of the film. If you can’t find it, please search all your email folders such as spam or the social folder. It has to be there.

Many of you wrote us wondering how it is going with the production of the artbook and the Blu-ray sets. The artbook took more time than we expected. Unfortunately, printing works has quite a full schedule until February, and we can’t deliver the data sooner than that. We will let you know an updated date of delivery at the beginning of the new year, but it will be on your table before the spring.

There is a very similar situation with the Blu-ray sets. Good news is that this late delivery allows us to make the set complete, so the box set will contain all seven Jan’s feature films.

We are very sorry for this inconvenience.

We wish you the best possible start to the new year.

Marek and the team

So happy Alice and Faust will be included. Now if only BFI upgraded their Svankmajer shorts collection...

I have just received mine. the book is bilingual and documents the birth of Insects nicely; it has the same dimensions of a bluray case but oddly it doesn't fit / doesn't belong to the bluray set.

The bluray set consists of seven stand alone amaray of classic blu cases, hold together with a very flimsy box jacket. A BD-25 is used for each movie.

edit: gave the discs a quick spin, Alice is somewhat darker than the BFI but loaded with extras, including an HD transfer of the Jabberwocky (1971) short.

I'd ask for pics but I guess it'll be a nice surprise to see when my set arrives.

I don’t know if it still applies now but Michael B said at the time of the campaign that the rights to Svankmajer’s movies are elsewhere and Arrow wouldn’t be doing these.

I guess we can hope that it’s with BFI and they do something like they did with the Derek Jarman sets releasing a blu ray set of the shorts followed by a blu ray set of the movies?

Mine arrived in Australia today which was super fast!

Would have preferred they have the posters as the full cover rather than itty bitty poster art and the huge black border. But a niggling complaint when these are some of the best movies ever made now in HD.
