Default Japanese Anime for Kids

Hello. Anyone know some good anime movies for kids? My daughter is 10.

Also, what is a good online store to buy some anime t-shirts for my 10 year old daughter? I went to ebay and don't see much options for kids.

Thanks for any advice!

Almost anything from Studio Ghibli would work in your instance, with the possible exceptions of Grave of the Fireflies (a very sad story about two young orphened siblings living
[Show spoiler]and subsequently dying
in a war-ravaged Japan during the last part of WW2) and The Wind Rises (largely a biopic of Japanese aircraft designer Jiro Horikoshi).

Since that still leaves ~20 titles, I'll recommend these six:
  • Castle in the Sky
  • Kiki's Delivery Service
  • My Neighbor Totoro
  • Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
  • Secret World of Arrietty
  • Spirited Away

Now that I think about it, a nice thing for your daughter about these movies is be that all six movies have either a girl or young woman as the protagonist or co-protagonist. That's not to say that's the reason why I chose them, as I'd picked them while focusing on suitability for 10-year-olds and largely ignored the gender of the target audience.

I like recommending studio Ghibli films for kids, and you can go to rightstufanime.com they have all different kinds of anime shirts.

Ponyo would be another great option as well.

Double-ditto on the bulk of Studio Ghibli's catalog. Only a handful are not kid-friendly.

Aside from that I can't really think of anything currently released: the bulk of anime distributed in the US is catered to teenage and young adult audiences.

Yep, can't go wrong with Studio Ghibli.

One I don't see mentioned yet is Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro. I don't remember if that's officially a Ghibli film or not, but it's of similar quality. Quite adventurous with lots of action, but still a nice story with mystery, levity, and everything. And it's available on Blu-Ray.

If she's into fantasy a lot, anything Slayers ought to be good too. There is a pretty huge series for it, but also a bunch of movies and OVAs, and a lot of it is pretty funny. And it's all rated PG. The movies/OVAs are on DVD only, but the newest TV series was put on Blu-Ray.

Just about everything else I can think of is too racy or adult-rated. Ask again in four or five years--she'll be old enough to enjoy Escaflowne and Bleach and Steamboy and so many others.

While it's not technically a Studio Ghibli movie (as it was formed only after Nausicaa's production), it is written & directed by co-founder Hayao Miyazaki. It's close enough to even earn a spot in their Japanese "silhouette" Blu-ray lineup as well, for what that's worth.

The only "problem" it would have for a 10-year-old is that they wouldn't know what the pre-existing characters' relationships are to each other since they'd have no familiarity with the manga and multiple anime series that Cagliostro is based on. The only ones that are self-evident in the film itself are that Lupin and Jigen are partners in crime and that Zenigata is a cop chasing Lupin.

That's a fair point. As an adult, I had no problem latching onto the plot/characters without that foreknowledge (still haven't seen the other Lupin III media ). But certainly, I don't know for certain how well a 10-year-old would grasp it.

Unfortunately, most of the shows aimed at younger children (Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon, etc.) are only available on DVD and dub-only if available at all. If that kind of release is fine for you, Amazon has plenty of them available. But as for collector-quality, sub+dub Blu-ray releases? Not a thing for those types of shows yet.

Even though you requested anime movies rather than shows. I still must recommend Cardcaptor Sakura. Your daughter will fall in love with the show.

A couple of good non-Ghibli movies are Welcome to the Space Show and Princess Arete which both have a similar family adventure movie spirit.

While I'd certainly suggest it for a 10 year old child, I do remember watching a lot of parents of smaller children cringe when I saw Spirited Away in a theater. It deserves its rating but has a bit more disturbing imagery and blood than some of the other Ghibli titles.

High School DXD.

But in all seriousness, like others, I would recommend Cardcaptor Sakura or any of the Studio Ghibli films.

Not a movie but Nadia The Secret of Blue water is an amazing series for kids (and adults too). She'll eat it up.

I have to 2nd that-CCS is Clamp at their best. And another one that I highly recommend is Magical Sisters Yoyo & Nene- it hasn't been released here so you'll have look around for a subbed version. One more that's very kid friendly is Oblivion Island-Haruka And The Magic Mirror.
