Default God of Gamblers - dvd differences

I’m searching for the original “god of gamblers” and I noticed they have a Blu-ray version. Is the Blu-ray version is actually better than the DVD? Since it’s such an old movie I wonder if I’m wasting money.

Also there seems to be 3 dvd versions. I need ntsc for USA. What is the difference? Don’t know why one is so much more expensive than other.

I believe one publisher is Vicol and and the other publisher is Mei Ah

I'd assume all three are NTSC, but I'm multi-region so don't take my word for it.

The Vicol Blu-ray is from a genuine HD master, so if you care most about image quality go for that.

If you want original mono you'll have to go for the remastered Mei Ah DVD.

The oldest DVD is cropped, has burnt subs, and is generally best avoided.
No idea why it's so damn expensive. Greed, I'd imagine...

Wait, so what do you mean by original mono? What’s the difference between the one you linked for $12.99

vs the remastered Vicol version here

The HK Blu-ray by Vicol blows away every DVD that has ever been released of GoG. I had the remastered Mei Ah DVD, which for years was the best version available, and it looks like sh*t compared to the Blu-ray.

The Cantonese audio ist only available as a 5.1 upmix, but this has been done with the original sound elements and no new sound effects or new music have been added (it's not a Fortune Star or Celestial title, so we are safe here).

Do yourself a favor and buy the Blu-ray.

The film's original theatrical soundtrack was mono.

That soundtrack is an option on the Mei Ah DVD, but not the Vicol DVD or Blu-ray.

I'm happy with the Vicol blu-ray. It's an improvement over the DVD.

I don't have it to hand, but I wonder if the 'mono' on the remastered DVD is a downmix. I suspect some of the Mei Ahs were.

I believe it was discussed once that the Vicol bluray of GOG had some different music cues than the original mono during the scene when Ko Chun met Long Ng the first time. But I have never verified this myself as I am not a die hard fan of this movie.

It's possible. But hard to tell as no new effects were added to the remix.

During the production of the 88 Films Blu-ray, we noticed remix had dialogue at two points (which we deleted):
  • Train announcement
  • Montage when 'Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head' plays
