At the moment the US releases are only in parts so you'll need each season Part 1 and 2.
There are five seasons of the original series, and currently three seasons of Crystal (Crystal is a remake and not a sequel and does not need to be watched to continue the story).

The original series goes-
Sailor Moon (Season 1)
Sailor Moon R (Season 2)
Sailor Moon S (Season 3)
Sailor Moon SuperS (Season 4)
Sailor Moon Stars (Season 5)
And the movies for each season contain the season's name in the title (there is a movie for R, S and SuperS. Only the R movie is currently out in the US)

The US releases are currently midway through season 4, with the second half coming out in a few months, season 5 will follow- presumably next year.

Kind of. It's a full on remake (that sucks in every single area), instead of a re-edit.

Just a heads up, the PQ on the US releases are some of the worst on all of Blu-ray.

Crystal is more closer to like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or Hellsing Ultimate as far as being another series that had an Anime in the past that was very different than the Manga and now has a rebooted series that does follow the Manga more closely but being not as good.

Super S The Movie is in select theaters today Subtitled tonight only.

Season 3 of Crystal was alright, after they totally rehauled the format and staff. But you're better off just watching the original, and if you really want more, maybe just check out season 3 of Crystal.

To be fair (I have no sources but I've read it a couple of times so take this with a grain of salt) I believe the manga was basically being made to keep up with the anime (after all, the anime was supposedly to promote the Sailor V manga, the Sailor Moon manga was just a spin-off), and the manga wasn't all that good to begin with (Takeuchi is a brilliant artist, but not a great writer). Crystal falls flat because it's basically following an inferior rendition of the series, among other things.

I wouldn’t have FMA Brotherhood and Hellsing Ultimate as good comparisons. Those actually have some things better than the original series, even though it’s debatable if they’re superior or not (adaptation quality be damned, writing is what truly matters).

If you’re watching the old anime, there’s zero reason to check out Crystal. It’s a remake that is worse due to being a 1:1 adaptation of an inferior manga to the anime.

Yeah the US Blus are bad even by Blu Ray standards. The Madman Blus are just slightly better just due to not so much artificially sharpening but still underwhelming. Honestly it’s sad that the Pioneer DVDs of S and SuperS from the early 00s look better than a 2010s Blu Ray.

I just took a s**t load of captures of the Dynit/Madman release. (It's from a fan-release with untouched Dynit video and audio muxed from the AU BDs)

They're from VLC, so there may be some inaccuracies in terms of colour, but it should give a good example of what it looks like.

How sad is it that after being so used to the Viz BDs, I find it so jarring to see Usagi’s mouth (and not the over contrasted white background) during the “I am the pretty guardian” speech?

It is a bit confusing, yes. Crystal is a modern redo of the original series that is more faithful to the manga, à la Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. As others have said, the picture quality of Viz's releases for the first series is abysmal, but each set does get a little bit better; the current fourth season, SuperS, actually looks pretty decent. Crystal's releases are fine in terms of picture quality.

If you want to watch/buy all of the show in the original viewing order, I recommend this:

1) Sailor Moon (Season 1, Part 1 -- available in both LE* and SE*)
2) Sailor Moon (Season 1, Part 2 -- SE only)
3) Sailor Moon R (Season 2, Part 1 -- LE and SE)
3) Sailor Moon R: The Movie (SE only)
4) Sailor Moon R (Season 2, Part 2 -- SE only)
5) Sailor Moon S (Season 3, Part 1 -- LE and SE)
6) Sailor Moon S: The Movie (just released in theatres, will most likely be available to pre-order soon)
7) Sailor Moon S (Season 3, Part 2 -- SE only)
8) Sailor Moon SuperS (Season 4, Part 1 -- LE and SE)
9) Sailor Moon SuperS (Season 4, Part 2 -- SE only, available for pre-order now)
10) Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie (just released in theatres, will most likely be available to pre-order soon)
11) Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (Season 5, Part 1 -- LE and SE, most likely will release in mid 2019)
12) Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (Season 5, Part 2 -- SE only, most likely will release in late 2019)
13) Sailor Moon Crystal (Set 1, Dark Kingdom Arc -- LE and SE)
14) Sailor Moon Crystal (Set 2, Black Moon Clan Arc -- LE and SE)
15) Sailor Moon Crystal: Season III (Set 3, Death Busters Arc -- LE and SE)

Ultimately, if you want to watch everything chronologically, you will have to wait about a year until they finish releasing Sailor Moon Sailor Stars.

*LE = Limited Edition, SE = Standard Edition. The Limited Edition sets come with a chipboard box that fits both Part 1 and Part 2 together, but you have to buy Part 2 separately

Skip Crystal. Absolutely pointless. The filler added to the 90s anime added tons of cool moments and character development missing from the manga.
