Aretha Franklin died of pancreatic cancer in Detroit today aged 76.

This is hard. She was a gateway drug to soul for me when I got into the Muscle Shoals scene and everything she did from 67 -72 (at the very least) is totally unassailable. I wasn't as into the 80's-and-on stuff, tho I know many love it, but her early Columbia and Atlantic recordings up to the mid 70's are as good an example of post-war American Music as you can get as far as I'm concerned. R.I.P.
