Default Black Jesus (dir. Mike Clattenburg)

I was waiting for years for the third season and looks as though it came out earlier this month (8 episodes in total). It's probably safe to say this may be the last as two of its actors passed away.

Charlie Murphy - In 2017
John Witherspoon - In 2019

In terms of director of Season 3, it seems it wasn't Mike Clattenburg so that's certainly not a good sign for me, as he's got his own style and you can tell when it's handled by someone else. Just take a look at Trailer Park Boys with and without Mike Clattenburg.

Still, I'm glad Season 3 came out as they had promised it long ago.

P.S. RIP Murphy and Witherspoon.

Agreed. Love the show. Gerald (Slink) Johnson really nailed Jesus and gave him a nice spin with his urban California semantics. I was surprised they lasted more than a season with its low budget form, but I am very pleased they found a way to bring more Black Jesus content. I just hoped black Jesus would have become more iconic. There was a bunch of backlash from super white Christian fundamentalists that like their Jesus white and square. But the truth was, Jesus was brown, and his people were the underclass. He would gladly smoke weed with them and turn water into Hennessy.

I've just watched the first four episodes of Season 3 and am pretty damn disappointed. Aside that the episodes are no longer directed by Mike Clattenburg, they're missing some of the original cast, not as funny or interesting as it used to be and it just feels really silly and unrealistic. Plus, it feels disconnected from Seasons 1 and 2, sorta like this is a spin-off/parody.

What a shame, I really wanted to have enjoyed it.

These are my ratings for each season:

Season 1 - 8.0/10
Season 2 - 7.5/10
Season 3 - 2.9/10

Most people who watched Black Jesus back then probably forgot there's even a new season, despite they promised for so long and it does exist, but it's not anywhere near as good as the originals.

Well, Jesus was Jewish/Arab which means he was brown-ish, but who knows exactly. Some people make up their own Jesus to be "white" or "black".

The show Black Jesus was meant just to be a good time, fun comedy series and the original seasons were, but I can't say Season 3 is.

Anyhow, it's sad that John Witherspoon and Charlie Murphy passed away. Witherspoon is on Season 3, but without Murphy it's not the same at all.
