Peter Jackson's debut feature film Bad Taste is being remastered and is due for re-release, it has been revealed.
The splatter flick will be shown at the plush new Roxy Cinema in Miramar next year, cinema staff say.
The 1987 comedy-horror shot mostly around Pukerua Bay centres around the mystery disappearance of the population of a small town.
Starring Jackson in a lead role, the films follows a group of friends attempting to counter revolting pink aliens who are seeking human flesh for their intergalactic fast-food chain. Packed full of gory no-budget special effects it has earned a cult following.
Jackson co-wrote, directed, produced and starred in the film, wielding his own chainsaw. He even did the makeup and cinematography.
The film was shot on only on Sundays because Jackson had a fulltime job and his cast all played soccer on Saturdays.
The director is now one of the most dominant film-makers in the world and is busy directing the multi-million Hobbit trilogy from Wellington. His films have earned more than a dozen Academy Awards and the The Lord of the Rings trilogy generated almost $3 billion at the box office while his remake of King Kong earned more than $500 million.
Since the opening of Bad Taste he has established a movie-making hub at Miramar in Wellington where Wingnut Films and Weta Studios are based.
