Default 'Twas the Night Before Christmas (1974) - 10/4/11

I think this release deserves it's own thread. A Christmas classic from 1974.

Blu-ray.com

Quote:
This October, Warner Home Entertainment will release the Rankin-Bass Christmas special 'Twas the Night Before Christmas on Blu-ray. Narrated by Joel Grey (Cabaret), this animated television program centers on a clockmaker and his family as they try to get back in Santa's good graces after he receives an insulting letter.

Warner has not announced a full list of technical and supplemental features for the 'Twas the Night Before Christmas Blu-ray; check back later for further updates.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas streets on October 4th.

wonder why they didn't use the stop motion with this special?
that's probably why no-one ever talks about this special. the stop-motion ones are the real classics.

This one is just as much of a classic as the ones that use stop-motion animation. It's played every year on television, unlike some of the less popular Rankin-Bass Christmas specials. I do wonder how good it will look on Blu-ray, though a few of the prior Rankin-Bass specials have looked great in HD.

This has always been one of my favorite Christmas specials. I also really like A Charlie Brown Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, and Frosty's Winter Wonderland, all of which are traditional animation and not stop motion. And don't confuse Frosty's Winter Wonderland with Frosty Returns. Frosty Returns sucks.

Yeah Frosty Returns is not that good at all...yet it is the one that is always included with the original Frosty special on the DVDs and I believe blu-ray as well. Frostys Winter Wonderland is the true sequel to Frosty. I hope Winter wonderland gets a blu-release next year or sometime soon. As for Twas the night Before Christmas I love it as much as the other rankin bass stop motion animated Christmas specials. I plan on picking this blu up after Halloween sometime I hope it looks great on blu-ray(I am sure it does Frosty looks really good)

Absolutely. As a child of the 70s (I was 3 when this first came out), it wasn't one of the seminal TV specials that you looked forward to seeing each year, but when it came on, you realized how much you missed it since the year before. It sucked you in just like the stop-motion RB specials, especially with the really catchy tunes.

Plus, it had George "Mr. Hollywood Squares" Goebel. That in and out of itself gives it a +1.

This is one of my favorites. I have the DVD version, but wonder what it is like on Blu-ray. I can't justify the price though for it being the only thing on the disc.

I picked this one up because it's been one of my favorite Christmas specials since I was little. Plus - you have to give this one a little respect because for a reasonably lesser known Christmas special, it DID get a pretty prominent shout out on South Park years ago on one of the Mr. Hankey episodes.

As for the quality of the disc - the picture quality is pretty great for a "lesser" Christmas special from the 70s, and I doubt it has EVER looked or sounded better. Of course it's not Lion King or anything, but I'm glad to have it in my collection and it was worth every penny to me.

My aunt and uncle taped this off TV when I was just a kid in the '80s, and I've lost count of how many times I've seen it. If the price was low, I'd probably buy it, but $20 or more for an hour or less is ridiculous, IMO.

Of all the beloved Holiday classic, this one is my all-time favorite. I've yet to pick it up, but I will so this Holiday season I will have it to show to my 5 daughters.

That looks awesome. 2-Discs? Is it a Blu-ray/DVD combo then?

I would like to get this for the kids, but the price is going to have to come down to earth.

Yes! It's a Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack. The DVD gets the better looking disc art of course.

If you are a member of BJ's, they have this BD for $9.99 in a Christmas display with other seasonal titles from WB. It is not that great of a value though, no bonus Rankin-Bass specials are included.

At suggested retail retail of $24.99, or something, it is a rip-off. But, for the $9.99 at BJ's it was worth it. They also had Year Without a Santa Claus and some other Christmas stuff for the same price.
