Default My Hollywood Video slowing customer's transition to HD media.

I have the MVP membership at Hollywood video where I pay 25 dollars a month and I get to keep out two movies at a time with no late charges and all that stuff. I've had it for almost a year and when I got a PS3 last spring I started to rent the occasional BD under the membership and it always scanned through fine.

So yesterday I rented "Sunshine" on BD. I was shocked because they don't put out the new releases on HD-DVD or BD until a Thursday or Friday. So I snatched it up and when I took it up to the counter the guy looked surprised and scanned it and then I left. I took his shocked look as nothing important.

So I returned it this morning to exchanged it with the DVD version because someone else in my family wanted to see it and doesn't have a BD player. The girl upfront said "Did you have this on your MVP account?" I said yes. She said I wasn't supposed to because they aren't allowing HD movies to be used on the MVP account anymore. I said "Since when?" She said, "Yesterday."

I asked her how much it was to rent a BD normally? Her reply was 8.50. An HD-DVD costs 5.50. So now I can't rent out a BD without drilling a hole into my wallet and to try out a movie to see if I want to buy it.

Discuss.

I guess they have to try to return to profitability somehow, but ouch.

Cancel your membership, and sign up elsewhere. Or join Netflix or Blockbuster. Be sure to let them know why you are leaving.

Switch to Blockbuster. You can pay 21.99 a month for two films at a time unlimited with in-store exchanges (which basically allows you to have up to 4 films out at a time). Plus, there is no extra charge for Blu and they usually have a decent selection.

$8.50? Bwhahahaha. Join Netflix, pay a lot less and get HD movies for no extra charge. $16.99 for three movies at a time and even 17 hours worth of free downloads a month if you want them.

I used to use Netflix but it takes forever to get new releases in Blu. They are constantly listed as Long Wait (as they are on Blockbuster.com) but with the in-store trade, you can pretty much always get the new release on Blu you are looking for.

Or, better still, ask them how they can arbitrarily change the terms of a subscription service without properly notifying you of said change?

THEN cancel your membership and tell them that $8.50 to rent ANYTHING is ridiculous unless it comes with services of an adult nature, popcorn, and a free box of Whoppers. Jeez...

Exactly. I used to have Netflix before I got into BD. Even on DVD new releases it would take a while sometimes. I would think about Blockbuster but I was reading that you only get 5 in-store returns per month. That would kill me because I could literally throw a rock from my house to the nearest Blockbuster.

But it is 3 out at a time which is pretty good. Thanks guys though for a head's up. The Hollywood thing I think was like a minimum 1 year commitment or something stupid. I'll have to look into that as well.

I only signed it because they said all movies in the store were to rent. It's not fair that they change it mid-way through.

You should have asked to speak to the manager..

Laid down your ultimatum and maybe they would have realized the error of their ways...

I thought Hollywood Video was out of business too? They are in Dallas anyway! I sign up with the Blockbuster total access (2 out) program and can't be happier. I am still paying for the lower price of $14.99 per month, I think the new price is higher now. I get at least 8 movies per month and sometime more if I have time. Check out Blockbuster!

They filed bankruptcy and closed alot of stores. They recently submited a plan to return to profitability.

Point of Clarity : Movie Gallery [the parent company] of Hollywood Video did this.
