Question Are you fed up of sequels?

I know this is slightly contradictory to my other thread about sequels, but it seems to be something that many talk about in various other threads, so I thought I should set up a new one that is completely dedicated to it. (Sorry if there is already one set up.)

So, are you fed up of sequels? Because this is something that I've been thinking about for a while now, and I've come to the conclusion that the 'charm' of sequels has worn off. Several years ago it was a novelty for a sequel to come out and audiences were excited to see a new one. However that novelty is no longer there because of how many are coming out nowadays.

The other part that annoys me is the way studios are turning an original film into a franchise, just by comissioning a sequel that will inevitably lead to another sequel or more.
I know this isn't the best example, but it is the most recent; take Sex and the Cityas an example, forgetting about how bad the sequel is, did that film warrent another? No, it didn't, and this is the problem as there wasn't anything to add onto the original. (Who thinks Sarah Jessica Parker is attractive anyway?)

In my view there is only one sequel coming out this year that really needs to be released, and that is Toy Story 3, because who can hate Toy Story? It's been more than 10 years since the last film and the first two are still extremely popular and audiences actually want another one, and they've got it. I am easily going to see this the day it comes out and am so glad there's a third.

But what are your views on all the upcoming sequels?

Oh, and as an after thought, you could also include remakes in this thread too.

They don't bother me much. If its a series i love i want that sequel and will go opening weekend. If its a sequel to a movie i hated(Twilight) then i just ignore the sequels as they come. Sequels aren't going anywhere because Hollywood can only come up with 1 out 10 ten original scripts it seems.

Never had a problem with sequels. If I did not like the first one then I just would not go to see the second. Saying that, low budget, DTV sequels can annoy if they come after a great film and then ruin the original.

Without sequels we would only have 1 Bond, Terminator, Die Hard, Harry Potter, Alien, Toy Story, ETC. But you are right with SATC.

I'm ok with some, I think 2 is a good number.

First 2 Resident Evils I liked, 3rd I didn't.
First 2 Pirates of the Carribean I liked, 3rd I didn't
First 2 Spiderman's I liked, 3rd I didnt.
First 2 Xmen were ok, but the 3rd sucked.

There is plenty. It is kind of annoying, it's ok for some movies but sometimes they just need to stop. And now there is another RE movie coming out, lets hope it doesnt blow.

Not a big fan of all the sequels we are seeing now. I like sequels when there is a story to tell. It seems most sequels are there to make money (duh....) rather than tell an interesting story. If the sequel just "exists" or is pointless, I hate it. However some, like Iron Man 2, work well because there is a story to tell. Sequels are used as an easy money grab for the most part, however.

I'm getting sick of all the sequels/remakes/reboots etc.... Where is the originality!? Oh yeah, originality isn't profitable anymore (tell that to Pixar)....

The Pirates of the Caribbean and Spiderman sequels were awful!

Kill Bill and Kill Bill Vol 2 is an example of a great sequel. When there is more story to tell sequels are great but some sequels coming out, The Hangover and Avatar I think should have been just left alone.

Those two movies could be great but they most likely won't be nearly as good as the first.

I don't mind sequels, as long as they bring something a little different to the table than the previous film(s) and are worth watching. I would much rather have a bad sequel than a bad remake though, bad remakes just drive me insane

It all depends on the movies. Good movies I usually want to have sequels to (clearly some movies don't make sense to have sequels). I'm down with reboots as well, just depends how they are made.

Still sad that no Rambo 5 is coming

I'd love another Superman movie (sequel or reboot again)
I'd love more Edward Norton Hulk!
ID4 2 would be sweet!
Signs 2 (they get rain coats and conquer the world!!!)
War of the Worlds 2 (they get a flu shot and come back and liquify man into soilent red fertilizer!)

Spiderman.. thankfully they are rebooting.. hopefully it doesn't suck this time around.

Reboot:

If I like the movie I couldn't care less if it was an original idea, an adaptation (of a comic book, novel, short story, play, a toy, etc.), a reboot, a sequel, a prequel, a spin-off, a re-imagining, a remake...whatever.

Same rules apply if I don't like it

I agree on POTC and Spiderman. Likewise with Avatar 2 & The Hangover. I probably shouldn't jinx it, but I'm glad I've heard nothing of a "Wedding Crashers" sequel yet!

I thought Kill Bill was a single story split into 2 movies? I know I'm likely just splitting hairs, but I don't see the second Kill Bill as a true sequel... likewise, I don't see the 2nd & 3rd LOTR films as sequels either. I see them all as a single movie split into three parts.

Just my thoughts...

I don't mind sequels so much, especially if I enjoyed the first film [not counting pointless remakes like Saw XX]. However, what I'm getting really tired of is the slew of remakes we're getting these days.

Was it necessary to remake Nightmare on Elm Street? Really??? How about the Halloween films, Clash of the Titans, Bad News Bears, The Pink Panther films, or the two 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remakes that are in production right now?

Sequels I don't mind - if they further the story and character development. Plain re-treads that add nothing to the original, and in many cases detract from the original production, are a shame.

I agree. The only re-imagining I cant stand are Rob Zombie's Halloween movies.

Sequels don't bother me if the story was planned as more than one film (such as movies based off of a series of books) and as such maintain a continuity of story, things that were developed in the first movie get a plausible payoff etc.
But when they just make it to capitalize on the success of the first film (Matrix etc.) I usually tend to dislike them as was the case with the Pirates movies, which weren't awful but were obviously not planned as sequels.

I enjoy sequels for the most part. I can’t get enough ironman, hulk, pirates, matrix.

That’s just me though, I’m easily amused and can enjoy almost anything.

I don't mind about most remakes or sequels. If I don't want to watch them then I don't, but I try not to complain about them.

The Law of Diminishing Return applies to almost all sequels. Notable exceptions that come to mind are Star Wars V, The Godfather II and the Bourne movies.

What I'm sick of seeing is "reboot". Good god man, talk about an empty money grab.

Yes it is one story split into parts but that is what I prefer way more than sequels. Tarantino is talking about revisiting Kill Bill for a 3rd movie in a few years and that would be awesome. Star Wars and Lord of the Rings also do this. I would rather one story that is really long then 2 or 3 plots getting more ridiculous as the number gets bigger (aka Rocky).

James Bond is the only series that can just keep cranking em out and I will stay interested.

Sequels usually put a damper upon the first movie: Back to the Future 2+3, The Blues Brothers 2000, Caddyshack 2.

Sequels sometimes pull it off: Austin Powers series, Toy Story 2, Terminator 2 was AWESOME. The Dark Knight, The Godfather II.

Sequels are usually terrible but sometimes they can be better than the first.

Also I am so pumped for when the continue the newly rebooted Star Trek also Batman 3!!!!!

Although, technically, Pixar didn't WANT to make TS3, and only wrote the script to counter a bit of Eisner-era Disney blackmail at the time.
That they ended up making a good one anyway is just...well, what did you expect?

I can appreciate whining about Sex2--as even the first one looked like a bit of a relic when it came out, and turning the second one into Ishtar was just goofy --but anyone who's planning to spend all June whining about sequels just on the basis of the Pixar ones might want to research the whole story.
