Cool High-def format war still going ... for now

Interesting Read...

Here is another interesting read:
http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv...27579720080109

Of interesting note. Spokesmen for Target and Circuit City both make some very veiled "in-between-the-lines" pro HD DVD remarks.
Best Buy makes a veiled pro Blu-ray remark.

Is the war over? No. Has Blu-ray won another major battle? Absolutely. And with it's previous battle wins Blu-ray will almost certainly be the undisputed winner by end '08- 1st Quarter '09.

Wow, sounds like the retailers are more fed up than the studios. The retailers really could make or break a winner.

I am curious as to what HD-DVDs next move could possibly be. With just Uni, Paramount, and Dreamworks left how could they bring it around.

Add to that retailers wanting a swift end - how much longer could it last?

There's some interesting ideas at the AVS forums as to how they might recover, but, honestly, w/o content I don't see how.

Of course retailers are fed up. They know the next thing out there is downloads, that they will not see a cut of. They need to be pressuring Paramount and Universal.

"We are very excited to see progress of any type, and we see this as significant progress," said Circuit City Chief Executive Officer Phil Schoonover at CES.

not sure how this is pro HDDVD. This is pro one format. The only reason CC even carries Toshiba TVs and DVD players was it was the only way we could HD-DVD player. As a CE company at the time you had to have both. Now not so much

As far as the distributors are concerned, the war is pretty much a done deal... Blu has 70% of the market after May 2008. It takes a while for the retailers to catch up because there are still HD-DVD in stock, which they're going to have a hard time moving, but it's still available nonetheless.

Targets' VP Eastman is talking about consumers staying on the side lines, not the companies. While Target may not declare a winner they can declare support for one side. These kinds of changes are made at the highest level, well above a VP.

I dont know about Targets by you, but all around northeast Ohio the Targets have waaaay more shelf space for Blu.

That right there tells you which side they are leaning towards...the side that sells.

Circuit Shitty of course would pick HD-DVD. CC itself has had it's own set of issues. Suprised they are still in business. Carmax seems to be the only thing keeping that company afloat.

Hopefully they go away like CompUSA did/is.

I don't see anything pro-HD DVD in the Reuters report...

Things will go Blu soon enough at the retail level, that's the bottom line.

Well after today Paramount and Dreamworks are leaving HD. That's sounds like a death knell to me.

The stores are going to be stuck with some stock. I'm sure they can send some of it back. I expect that there will be some panic buying by the HD folks.

Maybe now I'll get the remastered Star Trek in Blu?

I've been reading up on some different angles on this. Apparently AV stores are set to be hit big time with Blu winning this war.

Over Xmas a small AV store sold 15 HD-DVD players and 0 Blu ray players. It did however sell a few PS3's. But because the mark up on PS3's is something like £10 ($20) there is no money in it.

Then you have the issue of both disc formats dying a premature death (lets face it if BD dies in the next 5 years thats still premature) with the introduction of downloadable movie content.

A few AV enthusiasts have already stated that Xbox live downloadable content is not as good as the disc based content they are used to. Alot of them are angry that they buy $1000's of AV equipment and may have to resort to quality which is subpar.

Then there is the issues of DRM, the technology (cost and understanding of it by the average consumer) and you have a problematic situation.

Soon there will be no AV stores (unless they resort to boxes that do all in 1 solutions) and no DVD stores. The industry is being squeezed at every level by this war and each time a new technology, a new company joins in. It just spells death to everything thats part of it.

It seems Sony is streamlining the industry to make mass bucks out of it, but it seems they don't care if anyone else is getting some of the pie. Same goes for Microsoft. Greed kills all.

Nah.. the war is over.

Store's are just reacting to the HD-DUD fanboy resistance. There are still a lot of delusional people in the red camp. Stores don't want to anger these consumers, but they see the Blu light at the end of the tunnel.

What's happening now is just 'post war mop-up. Is there a DOD name for that?
