"... A Magnificent Movie." -Michael Medved, New York Post

Oscar®-winners Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) and Emma Thompson (Howards End) reunite with the acclaimed Merchant Ivory filmmaking team for this extraordinary and moving story of blind devotion and repressed love.

Hopkins stars as Stevens, the perfect English butler, an ideal carried by him to fanatical lengths, as he serves his master Lord Darlington, beautifully played by James Fox (The Servant). Darlington, like many other members of the British establishment in the 1930s, is duped by the Nazis into trying to establish a rapport between themselves and the British government. Thompson stars as the estate's housekeeper, a high-spirited, strong-minded young woman who watches the goings-on upstairs with horror.

Despite her apprehensions, she and Stevens gradually fall in love, though neither will admit it, and only give vent to their charged feelings via fierce arguments. The film is marvelously acted by a supporting cast that includes Christopher Reeve and Hugh Grant.

It's great that this film is being released in North America, but if any members would prefer a cheaper alternative, I highly recommend Sony's region-free British release: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-R...Blu-ray/75727/

OMG Finally...one of the best films of the 90's in my book! Was going to buy the region free one but might just hold off now. Then I wont have to pester or beg someone to make a "custom" US cover that I could use for it.

I haven't seen this, but if I enjoyed Howards End, would I also probably like this one?

^ I've heard that the acting is superlative. This isn't my usual type of movie but I'd like to see it because of that.

I would think so! Both films (which are not my cup of tea usually) are exceptionally acted with fine drama. Remains is a sadder film than Howard's End but that makes it all the more haunting....

The Remains of the Day is leagues better than Howard's End. I consider it Merchant's and Ivory's masterpiece.

Remains of the Day features one of Anthony Hopkins' greatest screen performances. He's wonderful here as the head butler of the house. Leagues better than any recent film he's appeared in. The cinematography is great too, I love the opening tracking shot approaching the country house...and thank heavens Emma Thompson was cast over Meryl Streep. Highly recommended!

It might be less expensive but in all likelihood the Twilight Time one will have 24 bit audio (instead of 16 bit) and it might even have a better/newer encode as well.

it was released in 2013 so I'm confident the encode will look fine. I wish there were more region free options like this to counteract Twilight. Don't get me wrong, I would much prefer to order U.S. but $35 a crack for catalog titles is just not an option for everyone....

I will be getting FRIGHT NIGHT's reissue and possibly THE BOUNTY from Twilight.....

I also hope they use the original poster.
The UK cover is perhaps the worst cover I've seen in my life!

By the way, could we hope for MAURICE by TT?
This is my favourite Ivory film.

The European Sony disc was just released a little over a year ago. Excellent picture quality and Sony's encoders are the best in the business. I imagine the TT release could carry over the commentary they left off, but I think for the price differential I'll stick with the Sony BD.

I'm actually surprised TT is releasing this. I guess Sony couldn't be bothered themselves and Criterion had something of a falling out with Merchant Ivory. Bit of a shame really. They would've been perfect.

Love this movie, and never ended up owning the dvd, and have been waiting for a blu-ray release, but I guess I'll have to opt for the international version. No way paying $35 for it LOL

Doesn't surprise me as it's just another example of how much Sony cares less about the US. They release title after title in other parts of the world but turn their back when it comes to North America.

Given that Sony was recently hacked, again, and allegedly lost 100TB of data I wonder if any internal documents will surface showing their rationale for not releasing catalog titles in NA.

just ordered! $15 total a lot more affordable than $35!!

I'm sure tired of Twilight getting all these catalog titles... I've bought a couple but I've had to skip many because of the high dollar amount. Can't this company offer even a remote sale or discount once in awhile? (and yes, I know they did once on lower selling titles.. I bought 2 of them when they did)

The UK BD seems to have dumped the DVD commentary by Emma Thompson and Merchant & Ivory. Hopefully this BD will include it.

Hopefully it will also include the three docs and the deleted scenes.

It got like half a dozen Academy Award nominations including the big four (picture, director, actor, actress).

It's rather highly thought of over here

(It even showed up in a Sopranos episde)

I meant that it seems no other company (sony is it?) cared about its BLuray release.
