The focus here is on transcendental, poetic realism, neorealism, new wave, etc. films ... What are the 5-10 best slow films?

Many of the films that I think as best tend to be slow ... From the top of the mind recall, below is a tentative list in the order of release:

Bicycle Thieves (1948, De Sica)
Late Spring (1949, Ozu)
Tokyo Story (1953, Ozu)
Journey to Italy (1954, Rossellini)
Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962, Varda)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968, Kubrick)
The Conformist (1970, Bertolucci)
Solaris (1972, Tarkovsky)
Stalker (1979, Tarkovsky)
Come and See (1985, Klimov)

I have watched Jeanne Dielman at 1x and 2x.

Next, I am going to attempt to watch it upside down to see if it feels like a "masterpiece"

Literally all of those things are different to one another…and not necessarily equate to slow.

Agreed. I think what they maybe meant were movies heavy on mood and atmosphere and not necessarily story or plot.

Since I saw 2001 on a list of "New Wave" films I'm going to say 2010: The Year We Make Contact. It's slow, has conflicted characters, and makes one think about what alien contact might be.

“Slow” can have various degrees. Yeah, many of those are not necessarily “too slow”.

Good choices, zen007. I was going to add Woman in the Dunes. Instead, I'll mention one probably no one else here has seen, the Tarkovsky-and Tarr-esque Hungarian mood piece, Twilight (1990), directed by György Fehér.

I like how the sand is captured in Woman in the Dunes.

Taxi Driver is 'slow' according to the director. Sure like Solaris it has some fast moments.
