Criterion just announced a blu-ray of Victims of Sin, a 1951 Mexican drama starring Ninon Sevilla. This is exciting news. Victims of Sin is one of the best films from the "Epoca de Oro" and it remains shocking to this day. There is a scene on the train tracks that is as good as any American crime film. I caught this on Spanish language TV back in the 90s and searched out a DVD. Having a really good copy will be a treat.

This is an exciting release. The first cabaretera on blu-ray, and a
great one. When people see what director Emilio Fernandez and camerman Figueroa accomplished here, their reputation should skyrocket. Perhaps Criterion and other labels will then restore their other masterpieces for blu-ray release. They collaborated on many films, and yes, they made several masterpieces. "In México City, a Cuban dancer from "Cabaret Changó" rescues a baby from a garbage can and decides to raise him, but her pachuco pimp gets in her way." imdb |

Great news! I saw Enamorada at the BFI a few years back, it's the only Emilio Fernandez film I've seen but I loved it and have wanted to see more ever since.

Watched this back in 2017, as part of a film festival at UCLA and in Downtown Los Angeles called - Recuerdos de un cine en espaņol: Latin American Cinema in Los Angeles, 1930-1960. It is an excellent film. The film festival also screened some other good films as well.
Program guide to the festival for those interested: https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/latinamericanfilm https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/programs...ine-en-espanol https://www.cinema.ucla.edu/events/2...mas-del-pecado Last edited by BobbyMcGee; 06-26-2024 at 12:45 AM. |

What a great release, great PQ, audio, and special features.
I hope this release finds a big audience. It's got so much going on, yet not terribly complicated: traditional drama, noir, music, melodrama, dancing, drama. |
