France Jours tranquilles à Clichy (Claude Chabrol)

Jours tranquilles à Clichy Blu-ray

I see that LCJ Editions are planning to release Claude Chabrol's Jours tranquilles à Clichy (Quiet Days in Clichy) (1990) on May 2.

Note that this is not the 1970 version, but a remake featuring Andrew McCarthy, Nigel Havers and Barbara De Rossi.

The LCJ BD is to be released concurrent with a DVD which is listed on their site, and it seems that they will include both English and French audio tracks. Several retailers have listed the Blu-ray for pre-order however, so it would seem this is a definite release.

Information is very difficult to find on this film, but I am intrigued by it, because apparently Henry Miller fans abhor this version of his story, and I haven't cared for the Miller work I've read. It seems to have received mixed to very negative reviews both in English and French, but I am wondering if anyone else could share an opinion on it? It doesn't seem to have been released on DVD in either the USA or the UK, despite apparently being in English (either originally or partially dubbed).

I'm very intrigued to see this. The Amazon.fr listing states that there are English and French audio tracks, and French subtitles (which presumably go with the English audio track only). I presume the original language is English as the two main actors are English speaking but IMDB states the original language as French. If it is French and the English audio track is a dub, then it would be a shame if there weren't English subtitles...

At this time Chabrol was making good films. 'Story Of Women' and 'Madame Bovary' are excellent. However, this was made the same year as the terrible 'Dr. M'.

I'm still tempted to buy this though, especially as it will be the first Chabrol film on blu-ray.

McCrutchy - Have you pre-ordered this?

Yes, I saw all the information you did, although given the lack of English information on the film, I wouldn't be surprised to learn the film is technically in "English" even if many actors are dubbed, simply because McCarthy is American and Havers is English, although Chabrol could well have intended the film to be seen in French, since there are a multitude of French and Italian actors other than the two English-speakers. I would also have to assume that in each track, various parties have been dubbed from the opposite language (and possibly, also Italian), so this could be why LCJ have included both tracks.

If all goes well, yes, I hope to receive this disc shortly.

Cool! Please post again when you've watched it and let me know your verdict. I'll almost certainly order it, but it would be good to have your opinion before I do. Plus, it gives me time to see whether there are any other French releases I could order at the same time.

I ordered this in the end and the blu-ray arrived today. I watched the film with the English audio track earlier and it seems like this is the main audio track as the two main actors both speak in English. Some of the minor characters are quite obviously dubbed and there are a couple of French lines spoken near the start, but I don't think they're massively important to the understanding of the story. French subtitles can be turned off. Picture quality is very good throughout, although there were some small issues with a couple of the darker scenes (the main one I noticed is right near the end), although this is being very picky. Audio quality seemed good. The film itself visually feels very Chabrol, although I wouldn't say it's a typical story for him. I enjoyed it, it's not up there with his best work, but it's a good film and I don't regret buying the blu-ray at all. I will definitely revisit this again soon. Pro-B said he would review this release on the site when he has a copy, so I'm sure he'll give a more detailed review soon. Hope that info is helpful to anyone thinking of buying this release.

Confirmation:

The main feature and menu on this disc is encoded entirely in 1080/50i. The disc itself is not region-encoded.

The video extras, which consist of a 1:36 trailer offered in separate English (with French subtitles) and French versions, are in SD PAL format.

I have to say that this was a very curious film, and I agree with those who say it seems to go nowhere. The performances are all solid, and the costuming and set design are particularly good for what seems a modestly-budgeted production, but really, there is little plot, and not enough style to keep the viewer occupied in many scenes. Honestly, in my opinion, the reason to see the film is to see all the beautiful women in it, both naked (as they quite frequently are) and also garbed in their wonderful costumes and make-up.

I was disappointed to see that the film is encoded in 1080/50i, something which seems to be a common practice for LCJ Editions, according to the DVDClassik forum, and that the audio was low quality (224 kbps) DD 2.0--even in a dialogue driven film like this one, the audio was weak enough that some of the dialogue was less audible than I would have liked, but more to the point, I wished I could have heard the score, which would seem to fit the film perfectly*, in higher quality.

*provided I could figure out what Chabrol was trying to say with the film...

I see on the French Amazon site that this version is rated "Classé: Tous publics"
Which I take to be General Exhibition.

Just curious as many reviews are calling it fairly "Hot" (or is it just warm)?

The film has quite a lot of nudity and instances of sex, as well as some veiled insinuations of pedophilia (because the girl on the cover is supposedly "young" when the actress is clearly an adult), and would be at least an R-rating in the USA.

In France, films are rated very liberally, and most films are either rated "Tous publics" (Universal (U) / for all) or "Interdit aux moins de 12 ans" (restricted to 12 and over). (Wikipedia also says there is an "Interdit aux moins de 10 ans" classification, but I haven't seen this one on a video; certain films are also "Interdit à la location", which I assume gives the location discretion on whom to admit)

Only in extreme cases where the content is very realistic (or in pornography) do films get higher ratings of "Interdit aux moins de 16 ans" or "Interdit aux moins de 18 ans".

For reference (from Wikipedia):

Quote:
Films that have received comparatively low ratings in France compared to the U.S. include:

* American Beauty, U
* Fat Girl, -12
* Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, U (Rated R in US)
* Eyes Wide Shut, -10 (Rated NC-17 in US)
* Kids, -12
* Taxi Driver, -16, reclassified to -12
* Ichi the Killer, -12
* Braveheart, -10 (Rated R in US)
* The Exorcist, -12

This is in the Amazon.fr 3 for 2 deal right now. Just wondered if the version listed has the English audio? There are two listings on here, the one with the review (which has English audio), and another that just lists french. Anyone know if the one in the deal is the same? Confused.

Both are the same discs. Vidéo is in 1080i and soundtracks are in dolby digital stéréo in english and the dubbed french version, with french subs removable. Region free.

That’s good news. Bit of a bummer it’s interlaced, but Good for under 10 euros. Going to pair it with LouLou and Carmet De Bal.
