![]() ![]() I am convinced that the female character Wendoline in "A Close Shave" is actually a villain, a mastermind with daddy issues. The robotic dog Preston, is not the real villain, but is the evil minion of Wendoline. I will explain this, but I need to clarify a couple of things first: 1. This is going to be lengthy, so be warned beforehand. 2. I am going through the actual short film as I write this so I don't miss any story beats as I go along, so as far as I know, everything I will say story-wise will be in order of appearance in the short film and will be accurate. 3. As I go through my description of the movie, I will be adding in my explanations/theories at certain points. These will be within brackets and bold (like so). Anything in (brackets) and bold will be purely my own speculation/theory/voice. I may stray from this a tad, but forgive me for that. It's just how I'm going to do this. 4. This is purely a speculative theory of mine, and I know I could've done a Youtube video on this, but I couldn't be bothered with all the editing etc, so go easy on me. This possibility only just clicked in my mind when I actually paid full attention to the short film recently, as on previous watches it's always been made out that the robotic dog is the villain, but I digress. With that being said, let's dive in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ We start off with Wallace & Gromit in their daily lives, with Wallace sleeping. For reference, the clock in Wallace's room says 2am. We pan to a cheese knife falling to the ground from the rumbling of an outside vehicle, within Wallace's room. The title appears. Gromit is still awake, knitting. For reference, his clock also says 2am. We cut to the vehicle in question, a green truck, which stops at a red traffic light. This truck is full of sheep. One of the sheep accidentally falls out of the truck due to a wooden panel breaking. We see the passenger of the truck, a brown dog. The dog notices the sheep, realizing it has escaped. The sheep enters the home of Wallace & Gromit, as the dog attempts to go and retrieve the sheep. The dog is then stopped by Wendoline, who is the driver of the truck. She shakes her head at the dog, essentially telling the dog not to go after the sheep. (Alright so already it seems like Wendoline is the mastermind and the dog is just her minion. The brown dog was willing to just go and commit a crime by breaking and entering a house to get back the sheep, but I believe Wendoline had already foreseen this hence why she stopped the dog, to avoid causing more trouble and dragging more attention to them & what they're doing.) The dog makes a note of the sign outside Wallace & Gromit's house, a window washing service with the contact information. The traffic lights turn green and the truck drives away. The morning arrives, with Gromit pouring some tea and reading the newspaper. To note, there's a headline on the front page saying "Wool Shortage" and more text below saying "More Sheep Rustling". (Now you could argue that there's a shortage of wool because of the sheep rustling. I'd argue that it's the other way around. There's a shortage of wool, so someone is losing big business, and how do you go about getting more wool? Sheep Rustling.) Wallace enters the room. Here we see his invention of a gun that shoots out porridge faster for breakfast. This malfunctions, leading to a big mess. We then find out that the wire was chewed up, which was the direct cause of the malfunction. We then find out that the escaped sheep has been trying to find anything it can to eat during the night that it entered Wallace & Gromit's house. The phone rings. Who should call? Wendoline. (Now it was the dog that knew about that contact information and the location of the sheep, not Wendoline, so the dog must have been reporting directly to Wendoline.) The call is for windows to be cleaned at a wool shop. (Keep in mind about those headlines.) Wallace & Gromit leave their home for the store as fast as possible, as indicated by Wendoline, leaving the escaped sheep alone in their home. As Wallace & Gromit approach the store, the store's name says "Wendoline's Wools". We see the brown dog again, looking out of a window. (Now my theory is that he was told by Wendoline to keep an eye out for Wallace & Gromit's arrival, as she would stall them while the dog took a visit to their home to capture the sheep.) Wendoline gives a wave to Wallace through the window. (She's giving an almost awkward look like she doesn't want to deal with this sort of stuff which could land her in hot water with the authorities or worse put her business under. Maybe there's some slight flirting going on as some sort of lovey attempt to infatuate Wallace to stall him.) Wallace then gives an excuse to Gromit to enter the store saying "Need wool, don't you, lad?". We then see the brown dog, now downstairs and reading a newspaper close to Wendoline. Wendoline says to Wallace in this same shot with the dog "Thank you for coming so quickly". (Notice how this store is full of wool, considering the newspaper headline? They are definitely rustling for sheep to help the business, especially from the first time we saw Wendoline, to keep their wool stocked up and to keep their business afloat.) Then we see the headline of the newspaper which the brown dog is reading, which reads "Even More Sheep Rustling!". (I think maybe Wendoline is trying to either take advantage of a sudden demand, or she's purposefully orchestrated it all to try and get rich. I personally think it's the former though, because the latter sounds way too farfetched IMO.) At this point Wallace drops the ball, literally. He drops balls of wool on the ground. (Wendoline gives a worried look as if she's worried that Wallace might catch on to the fact that her store is full of wool despite the shortage which has been in the newspapers.) Wallace then apologizes and claims how embarassing the situation is. We then cut to Wendoline as she introduces the brown dog as Preston. Both Wallace and Wendoline pick up the balls of wool. Both of them go for the same ball and Wallace's hand holds Wendoline's hand over the ball. (It's impossible to tell from how it's shot, but I truly believe that she purposefully went for that ball with the intention of making Wallace grab her hand. Straight away she goes into that coy flirty mode with her eyes at Wallace, trying to infatuate him, to stall him.) Preston (This is now the brown dog to whom I will refer.) gets up, puts down the newspaper and heads for the exit in the awkward moment that Wallace and Wendoline are having. Wallace is struggling for words, saying "Well... I.." as Wendoline looks at him (longingly) and says (in an almost flirty sexy voice) "What was it you wanted?". Wallace does a (awkward shy guy) sigh and cough, and thinks, completely losing his train of thought. (Due to the infatuation.) While Wallace is losing his train of thought, Wendoline takes a peek out of the shop window, looking at Preston. (She's successfully stalled and her plan has worked, all but confirmed when she was seeing Preston heading to Wallace and Gromit's house to find the lost sheep.) Wendoline (while she keeps a weird happy face) officially introduces herself to Wallace. "Ramsbottom. Wendoline Ramsbottom". Wallace (being a savage) says "Oh.. charming." (Lmao) "I'm Wallace, uh.. the windows!". Wallace then asks "Is this place yours?". Wendoline then responds saying "Mhmm. My father left it to me. Along with his debts. And a few other things. He was an inventor.". (As Wendoline said "along with his debts & a few other things", she let out a bit of a sigh as she said it. The camera panned to a picture of Wendoline's father with his arm around Preston. The camera panned specifically to Preston when Wendoline said "a few other things". I can't help but feel like this is covering some dark twisted past.) (It's the fact that she said her father was an inventor. Inventors spend a lot of time working on a project/projects and they rarely have time for anything else. Heck I'm writing this theory and I'm not spending my time on anything else, everything else is taking a backseat. It's shown quite a lot in movies revolving around inventors as well, it's a common trope for them to not spend time with anything else. See The Fly & Flubber as two examples. So my theory is that, her father was a wannabe inventor, and had a dog called Preston, kinda like Doc Brown in Back to the Future & Einstein. His dog died, and decided to spend his life dedicated to bringing his dog back to life. So he created a dog food chain called "Preston's Dog Food", which was both a homage to his dead dog and some sound financing for his inventing.) (He then began work on a robot Preston, but this took up the time and a LOT of money he should have spent with his daughter, Wendoline. This ultimately led to Wendoline becoming alienated/estranged from her father, believing that he loved that dog more than he loved his own daughter, especially with her father willing to get into debt to finance the creation of this robotic Preston. Of course, I don't know how long exactly her father has been presumably dead for. I also don't know how he died. But this is my theory, so here's what I think happened: Wendoline's hate/dislike/whatever for her father built up to boiling point, and she got tired of not getting the attention from her father after years of him both working on Preston & juggling debts.) (She decided to change that and meddle with his invention, slowly changing the programming of Preston to ultimately take Wendoline's orders and not her fathers'. She then got Preston to "take care" of her father. She then got the keys to the dog food chain, and of course, her fathers' debts; and had to deal with the hassle of paying those off, possibly from her own money. Then with the profits from the dog food business, she could afford going into her own business of selling wool from the financing of the dog food business. Not to mention that she now has a robotic minion to do her bidding. It's perfect for a villain.) Wallace lets Wendoline know that he also is an inventor. (Wendoline seems to forcibly pull herself out of whatever she's thinking while staring at that photo to respond to Wallace.) Wendoline responds with "Oh.". (There's an awkward silence while Wendoline stares at Wallace with a fake smile, sorta like that old lady in the It: Chapter Two trailer huh? ![]() Wallace says "I see they still haven't caught those sheep rustlers yet." (Wendoline gives a worried look but goes back to fake smiling.) Wallace then says "Still, you've got plenty of wool, eh?". Wendoline's face changes and says "your dog's waiting.". (I think she is trying to force him to leave as to not get too much into that subject so Wallace doesn't connect the dots, but aha! She's forgotten that she was stalling for Preston! Sending Wallace back to his job his a bad idea... for a villain and her master plan!) Wendoline says "Oh, they're spanking. You've done a grand job.". Wallace later says "Windows are our speciality.". (This obviously confirms that their job of cleaning the windows was done, so it was indeed a bad idea for her to cease stalling, but hey, the plan could still work out, right?) We see Preston investigating Wallace & Gromit's house from outside, as Wallace & Gromit return home. Preston enters their basement to hide. Wallace & Gromit enter their house, where the sheep has bitten through everywhere looking for food. Gromit finds the sheep chewing on a bone in the kitchen, covered in a mess from chewing through everything. Wallace picks up the sheep, and goes to get the sheep cleaned up. Wallace enters his basement with the sheep, revealing his own invention, "Wallace's Knit-O-Matic". Wallace places the sheep in the "KOM", reassuring the sheep that it's only a shampoo and that the invention has been tested, being confirmed also by Gromit. Preston peeks through the floor as he finds the sheep he's been looking for (under orders of Wendoline!) The machine throws a 404 (fault/error) and the machine automatically switches from "wash" to "light shave". (This reminded me of the porridge gun, only I don't think this has been tampered with by the sheep or by Preston, since I'm fairly certain that Preston wasn't hiding long enough to sabotage the machine, since he wasn't there for that, and the sheep couldn't access the basement anyway.) Calamity ensues, meanwhile Preston takes a good closer look at the KOM machine which he is seeing for the first time. (I think he gets a lightbulb idea that the machine could drastically help with both the sheep rustling and the wool selling, and could create a line of woolen clothing which would please his master, Wendoline.) Everything turns out better than expected as a small woolen top is made from the sheep, and the sheep is unharmed. Preston watches as Wallace picks up the sheep and says to Gromit "We'll call him Shaun, eh? Come on, Shaun.". Preston makes noises and nearly alerts Gromit to his presence. Right before Gromit leaves the basement, Preston hides. (As if Preston thought he was seen by Gromit.) Preston emerges from the floor, finds the blueprints to the KOM machine, and leaves. (Now it is important to note that Preston was the only person besides Wallace & Gromit that knows the name of the sheep is now "Shaun". I'm also fairly certain that Preston thinks he was spotted by Gromit.) We then cut ahead in time and Gromit is reading a newspaper, with a new headline! This headline says "Killer Dog On Loose" with a picture of a presumably dead sheep. Shaun (the sheep) takes a bite out of this newspaper and is revealed to be wearing his own wool as a coat. The camera then pans across the room as we see Wallace attempting to repair the porridge gun. Wallace then says to Gromit "Gromit. You know we're doing the clock tomorrow?". Gromit gives a confused look. (Okay so a few things here. I'll start by saying what I think happened: Preston went back to Wendoline with the blueprints. He confirms to her that he found the sheep and told Wendoline that the name of the sheep is "Shaun", but the sheep is still with Wallace & Gromit. Preston then told Wendoline that he thinks he was caught by Gromit in their basement, so Wendoline gets Preston to go and kill a sheep to make the headlines which will be a setup for Gromit.) (This would get Gromit put in jail, and tie him to the sheep rustling scandal which would put Wendoline and Preston in the clear with the authorities. With Gromit out of the way, they could simply get Shaun, and continue on with business as they steal Wallace's invention to help their business and discredit Wallace. Or they could simply keep him as a fall guy for a future setup. As for working on the clock, the clock is located right outside of Wendoline's Wool store, which I firmly believe was a call placed by Wendoline to Wallace to get them in the area, since her flirty attempts seem to have worked on Wallace, as he seems infatuated when he mentions it to Gromit.) So Wallace & Gromit go and clean the clock, and Shaun the sheep is also with them. (How convenient for the mastermind eh? Hehe.) It is revealed that the porridge gun has now been re-worked into a soap shooter. Wallace pops in to visit Wendoline (infatuation going strong at this point) and Shaun follows Wallace. Gromit notices Preston looking out of the same window as before (looking specifically at Shaun), and then Gromit himself looks at Shaun for both Preston & Gromit to see Shaun enter an open door close-by. (Which was all purposefully setup.) Preston then gives a stern stare at Gromit, and Gromit gives a stare back. (They both are onto each other at this point.) Now we cut back to Wendoline (doing her good old stalling trick) as Wendoline wants to talk about Windows with Wallace. (Really, that's the best subject you can come up with Wendoline? sheesh. I'm also not buying that fake interested smile and look she's giving Wallace. He might be buying it, but I'm not, damn it!) The conversation switches from windows to Wallace's inventions. Wendoline asks "Oh what sort of inventions?" (Yeah, like you don't already know that the KOM is one of them. Look at her hand gesturing when she says that. Those hands are dirty, I tell you! dirty!) Wendoline says to Wallace "Daddy would have loved to of met you.". She sighs as she says "Poor daddy.". (Yes, poor daddy, having an evil witch like you as his daughter!) All the while in the background, Gromit was cleaning the window on some ladders. Gromit sees and hears Shaun above him, poking his head through a hole in the wall. Gromit climbs up the ladder. Gromit puts his head through the hole in the wall, to find Shaun sitting next to him. A photo is then taken of Gromit as it is revealed that he has inadvertently been part of an image on the wall on the other side. Gromit goes to investigate while Wendoline and Wallace are still talking (stalling). Gromit finds an empty room, and notices the picture he was a part of. He then notices a can of Preston's Dog Food. (Before I go any further I should cover what I think happened: Preston lured Shaun with a can of dog food up to the "framing room" since Shaun is known to be hungry, of course. This was all to get a photo of Gromit who was about to kill Shaun. I believe that Preston took this photo, then took the polaroid and Shaun and headed to the truck.) Gromit hears Shaun again, this time from outside. He looks out of a window to see Shaun inside the green sheep rustling truck along with a ton of other sheep. Gromit goes to investigate, meanwhile Wallace and Wendoline are still struggling to form a sentence! Preston notices Gromit investigating. (and was parked up precisely for Gromit to get to the truck.) Gromit opens the back of the truck to free the sheep inside. The sheep stampede through the wool store, whisking away Wallace from his conversation. (Which I'm sure is a relief for Wendoline.) Wendoline holds onto Wallace's hand. (To keep that infatuation going.) Gromit notices Shaun tied inside the truck. He unties Shaun, only for the truck to close up, with Shaun narrowly esaping the truck, but with Gromit now locked inside. (So basically Preston took Shaun and tied him up in the truck and got all the sheep inside as well. He was following the plan to frame Gromit since he had the polaroid on him, all he had to do now was capture Gromit and drive him straight to jail, not passing go or collecting $200.) We cut ahead in time, and Wallace is reading a newspaper with a new headline that reads "Killer Dog Gromit Arrested", along with a picture of the picture Preston took of Gromit. (This ties perfectly with the previous headline which I believe was setup by both Wendoline & Preston. There's also a high street fish sale on Saturday, I bet those prices are cheap. Yes, that was an attempt at humor but you wouldn't know that unless you're watching the short film along while watching this.. you know what. Nevermind.) Wallace's doorbell rings. It's Wendoline. She apologizes to Wallace, and tells him to stay away from both her and her wool store. She says "Forget me. I'm no good for you.". She sobs and says "I'm so sorry about Gromit.", then leaves. (Why should she apologize if she's done nothing wrong? She's a villain! Yes I sound like Sam talking to Frodo about Gollum but she's a villain damn it! Yeah, damn right she's no good for him. Something me and her agree on. Then comes the fake crying and sobbing as she mentions Gromit. Yeah she may not have expected for Wallace & Gromit to enter in on her plans but getting those blueprints turned out good for her hmm? She's not sorry about Gromit, neither is Preston. That's called acting.) The newly freed sheep now live with Wallace. Wallace picks up the latest newspaper as a new headline reads "Sheep Dog Trial Continues". There's a small montage of Wallace reading newspapers with headlines, which read (in order of appearance) "'Gromit Bit Me' Says Shepherd", "Gromit Gets Life". (I think here that the trial goes well for Gromit, he's about to get out of it but then Wendoline & Preston get a fake witness to report in on the trial to ensure Gromit goes down.) We then see Gromit doing his time. He is given dog food (oh, the irony) and a package, which is revealed to be a 5000 piece jigsaw. (Notice here that Gromit starts to cry and sob. See how his eyes get wet with tears? Wendoline's eyes didn't get like that. Little Miss Dry Eyes doesn't fool me one bit!) Time passes and Gromit completes the puzzle. He reads a hidden message on the puzzle, which reads "Friday Night 8PM Be Ready. A Friend.". Gromit looks at the calendar, it's Friday. (Rebecca Black get out of my head damn you to hell!) Gromit then looks at the time, and it's 8pm. Shaun then appears in the jail cell window. (And somehow manages to operate steel cutting machinery like a boss.) Jailbreak! There's a nice balancing act led by Wallace and the freed sheep, but alas with a jail, naturally comes a bar of soap that's on the floor. (He probably should've bent over and picked that one up though.) Wallace slips on the soap and the sheep land on top of him. Wallace and Gromit are now in an open field with the sheep, hiding from distant sirens from the jailbreak. Out of nowhere, the green sheep rustling truck shows up. (Back to our regularly scheduled business of sheep rustling with Wendoline & Preston with Gromit & Wallace presumably out of their way.) Preston & Wendoline exit the truck, as Wendoline looks around while Preston tends to the sheep. Wallace shouts out to Wendoline but Gromit stops him midway through her name. Wendoline then blows a whistle, and Preston gets the sheep on the truck. (Now this is my theory on what is going on: When Wendoline went to visit Wallace to tell him to stay away, she noticed the sheep were with him. It's important to note that only she was there, Preston was not there to notice that the freed sheep were with Wallace.) (So, this could be one of two things. The first: Wendoline wanted those sheep and tasked Preston with following Wallace to get the sheep back. Neither of them could do this without the help of Wendoline. The second: It was pure ignorance and coincidence. They assumed everything was taken care of and was just going out to continue rustling now that Wallace & Gromit were out of the way. Regardless of which one it is, for now, I noticed Wendoline looked around, maybe to make sure there were no late night working farmers etc, that they were alone and there were no witnesses. I'm not sure if Wendoline heard Wallace shout her name or not. I think not. After blowing the whistle she seems to look down like she is somehow defeated.) Preston rustles the last of the sheep onto the truck, with only Shaun left free. Preston turns to Shaun to grab him and put him on the truck, meanwhile Gromit promts Wallace to hide out of view. Wendoline smacks Preston in the back of the head with a stick telling him to stop it, when Preston stops the stick and snaps it in half. Wallace & Gromit are now disguised as a scarecrow. (Whether or not their hiding trick works, there's no reason for Wendoline or Preston to think they are there without my theories.) Wendoline wants out of rustling. (Probably because it's too risky with the authorites, she's jumping out of that hot water while she can. Plus everything is nicely tied to Preston, not her. Clever girl.) (I also think this is acting on her part. There is simply no way I can believe that she thinks Wallace & Gromit aren't there and that she's saying this of her own free will. She's putting on a show for them to see she is the innocent victim that can't possibly do any wrong, despite doing wrong anyway. She ain't fooling me. Just because she stopped/is stopping doing wrong doesn't mean she gets to escape the consequences from when she was doing it.) She says to Preston "Daddy didn't create you for this. You're supposed to protect me.". Preston locks her and Shaun inside the truck. Wendoline says (loud, clearly and specifically) "Let me out. You're not going to turn me into dog meat.". (First of all, again bringing up about her daddy. Is it me or does she only like to talk about her daddy when Wallace is there to hear it? She doesn't mention it any other time. Second of all, yes, Preston is supposed to protect her, but IMO it's protection from the law. Preston is the fall guy for Wendoline the entire time. Third of all, why was she not even scared or panicked in her voice when she said to let her out? It was just so orderly and clear, like damn, her emotions are calm as hell. Probably because it's an act! Ha! Of course this act will work on Wallace because of the infatuation which is still there. Oh what a tangled web we weave.) Wendoline then shouts "Help" as the truck drives away. (Without my theories, she knew nobody was around to hear it, so why even bother shouting it out? It didn't even sound convincing. I bet she was expecting a certain infatuated someone to hear it? Hmm?) Wallace & Gromit give chase. The truck hides from them as Wallace & Gromit drive right by them. (Wait, WHAT? That's not possible? Without my theories, Neither Preston or Wendoline knew that Wallace & Gromit were there, so why would they hide? One could assume that they were trying to hide from any and every potential witness to their crime, if Preston had noticed someone in the mirror. I'm gonna press X to doubt on that one. Either Preston knew from Wendoline, or Wendoline knew and signaled it to Preston. Again, two options. The first: Wendoline knew from when she saw the sheep at Wallace's house and connected the dots that Wallace would probably be close-by. The second: Wendoline HEARD Wallace call out her name, and used the Whistle to alert Preston that people/witnesses were close-by and needed taking care of. I mean, whistles are more often than not associated with dogs, not sheep, IMO. But hey that's a whole other debate.) Wallace says "We've lost them!". The truck then comes up behind Wallace & Gromit. Gromit then does a trick to get behind the truck. This trick knocks the pin out of the bike, causing Gromit & Wallace to split. Gromit plunges off a 2000ft drop, but converts his casket into a plane. We then see Wallace attempting to open the back of the truck. Wendoline says "Wallace help me.". (Not convincing, sorry not sorry.) Wallace opens the door. Shaun walks over Wallace to the bike. Wendoline then says "Be careful, Shaun.". (WHAT IN THE HELL? Without my theories, how the HELL did Wendoline know the name of the escaped sheep? That information was only known to Wallace, Gromit & Preston in their basement! Wendoline wasn't even there! I'm telling you, she f***ing knew! Preston told her and gave her the KOM machine blueprints!) Gromit reveals the porridge gun from his plane, and uses it to prepare an assault on the truck with porridge! (*Salutes the red arrow*. You'll get the joke if you're watching it with me.. you know what. Nevermind.) Calamity ensues and Preston hits the breaks to get everyone on the back of the truck. Assault commences, and the plane pulls up narrowly avoiding a wipeout. The truck pulls into a concealed entrance, located next to the Wendoline's Wool store. (They keep their business close-by!) Now they're in a factory, about to test an upgraded version of the KOM machine, now known as "Preston's Knit-O-Matic". The sheep, Wallace & Wendoline are all getting shampooed, when Preston pulls down the vacuum. At this point Wendoline calls out to Shaun for help. (Looks like they had it all nicely setup. They've got Wallace's invention on an industrial scale, one that shaves sheep in bulk, takes their wool and knits it instantly, then turns the sheep into dog food. Perfect to cover both the dog food business and the wool business, for a villain, that is. She must've at least overseen this to help Preston find the right place to build the machine within the factory. Again, Wendoline knows Shaun's name? WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME? MARTHAAAAA!) Shaun helps, setting up a neon sign to indicate to Gromit where they are located, which is now officially "Preston's Dog Food". (So the factory they are in is actually the dog food place the entire time. So the store must just be a front for that business, or vice versa, or not at all. Whatever lol.) Gromit then goes through 3 doors and a brick wall, crashing into Preston, who catches & stops the plane, forcing Gromit to fly out of it. Shaun then pulls the vacuum over to Preston, which sucks him up. Gromit then changes the KOM setting to "A Close Shave". (Ah! See? I said it! Name of the movie in the movie!) Wallace applauds Gromit for altering the machine. (It has to be noted that Wallace looks happy when he does this, but Wendoline looks like she just lost a war lmao.) The KOM then breaks. Wendoline says "He's malfunctioning." The cat is out of the bag. Wallace is told that Preston is a robot. (Okay, no shit he's malfunctioning? He's a robot being skinned alive by a machine! Way to make out like Preston's the one who's completely f***ed up evil and not yourself, oh innocent evil spider-woman web weaver!) Wendoline says "Daddy created him for good, but, he's turned out evil!". (Well, yes that is true. Her dad did create Preston for good, and he did turn out evil, because she programmed him for it! Then she holds on to Wallace like a fake innocent victim would, and makes the most hilarious fake shocked face I've ever seen lmfao. I don't buy her act at all!) There's the big reveal. Preston comes out looking like The Terminator. Preston comes for Shaun. (Probably to put him back in the machine like Wendoline wanted, but it's too late now. Wendoline has jumped ship from that business, clever girl.) Gromit saves Shaun before Preston can grab him. In comes that cool little dressing robot to give Preston his skin back, how thoughtful! Preston inadvertently flips a switch while attempting to get the fleece off. Everyone is lifted up to reveal "Preston's Mutton-O-Matic". A "Sheep mincing thing". (Thanks for that accurate description, Wallace. On point! ![]() Time passes, and Wendoline visits Wallace. Wendoline passes by to thank Wallace for fixing Preston. She says "He's just like he used to be". He hands Wallace a newspaper like a normal dog would do. Wallace holds up a screwdriver and says "Give me a shout if he goes wrong again.". Wendoline replies "You're very kind.". Wallace invites Wendoline inside, saying he was about to have cheese. Wendoline says "Oh no, not cheese. Sorry it brings me out in a rash. Can't stand the stuff.". Wallace replies "Not even Wensleydale?" Wendoline pauses, then says "Got to be on our way. Come on, Preston.". And with that she turns around and walks to the gate. She says "Goodbye, Chuck.". Wallace then questions "What's wrong with Wensleydale?". He doesn't mind as he says "All the more for us, and not a sheep to worry us!". He lifts the cheese plate lid to reveal Shaun eating his cheese. The film ends. (So when Wendoline visits Wallace, he greets her with a smile, she does not greet him with a smile. Obviously, for the sake of staying in good standing she thanks him for fixing up Preston. However when she says "He's just like he used to be", I couldn't help but feel like she wasn't too pleased about that, but it was for the best if she was to move on from her rustling days. When Wallace says "Give me a shout if he goes wrong again" I felt the irony, because it confirms that not only was Preston wrong, but her too as a direct result. She didn't react though, and said he was "very kind", even though the way she said "very" seemed like it hurt her deeply lmao. Wallace's infatuation is still there! He invites her in thinking it could go somewhere, but she has other things in mind, like I don't know, fixing her dog food factory to be a legitimate business again? That'd be a start. Getting wool legally would certainly help as well, and no minions this time! She's not Gru.) (She pretty much lays on the heavy hint that she doesn't want anything to do with Wallace when she practically says she gets rashes from cheese. She never wanted anything to do with him to begin with, it was all business. Lord Business. She didn't even bother to respond when he asked "Not even Wensleydale?"! Yes, that's very rude, but it's expected from someone who just lost the battle and the war lmao. The saltiness is so fresh I can taste it. That goodbye was weird as well. How out of place was that?! Hands shaking saying "Goodbye Chuck". Weird. I'm going out on a limb here, but I'd say that it was a goodbye style that her father used often, and she did that as a last goodbye, not only to Wallace, but to her father who's first name or nickname could've been Chuck? Whom she probably saw in Wallace considering that they're both inventors. Charlie Ramsbottom? Charles Ramsbottom? Chuck Ramsbottom? The possibilities are endless.) Welp, that is all of my sleep time gone. It's probably all for nothing anyway, who cares about a theory on a small short animated film? It's all clay for christ sakes! It's just something that made more sense to me the more I thought about it, and re-watching it all but confirmed my suspicions. However, am I wrong? Did I miss something out or make an error in my theory? What are your thoughts? I don't know why I even did this but the hell with it lmao. Maybe I'm crazy. You tell me! ![]() Just in case you're not sure, the word "chuck" is normally only used in the north of England as a term of affection, a bit like saying "dear" or "love". So Wendoline would have been fond of Wallace I guess, and this was her way of saying goodbye. To be honest, I've never been fond of cheese myself, so I can understand her reluctance to accept Wallace's invitation. ![]() |

I always liked the look of despair on Gromit's face when Wallace is speaking to him, as if he can tell there's going to be trouble. He might not speak a word of dialogue, but the expressions on his face tell you everything.
![]() A shame the guy who voiced Wallace (Peter Sallis) died a couple of years ago. |

And yeah, Peter Sallis was amazing. This is why it surprised me to find out that Nick Park confirmed that he's working on a new Wallace & Gromit adventure. I imagine they'll find someone who sounds identical to Sallis. |

I haven't heard any word of who may replace Sallis, but like you say, I would assume it'll have to be somebody with a fairly similar voice. I don't know if you've ever watched Last Of The Summer Wine, but Sallis was one of the three main characters in the series, which first ran in the early 70's. It was basically a very gentle comedy made by BBC about three retired guys who tried to make the most of their twilight years. |

Maybe they'll use that voice actor again, or possibly someone else who sounds more authentic. I've also seen bits and pieces of Last of the Summer Wine. I always enjoyed watching it whenever it was on, but never went out of my way to see the entire series. Maybe when I'm older, perhaps. |

Yes, it may well have been an interview by him where he tells us about his future plans. I'd like him to make another feature film of Wallace & Gromit at some point, as I loved Curse Of The Were Rabbit (thankfully coming out on blu-ray shortly).
As for Last Of The Summer Wine, well I began watching it in the late 70's when I was still at school. The best episodes for me personally were the 1980's series. The later shows made from the mid-90's onwards somehow just weren't the same, especially as the main characters were getting replaced once the original cast were gradually disappearing, and in the end I just stopped watching them. |

Any new Wallace & Gromit short was normally premiered on BBC during the Christmas period. It was always seen as a major attraction in the TV schedules. I recall back in 1995 when A Close Shave was being premiered, the BBC even featured the duo on their BBC2 channel logo. The Wrong Trousers was also screened.

Indeed, for me too. The original BBC DVD from many years back actually included the various Christmas idents they made as a bonus feature, but it's a shame they couldn't have ported them over onto the blu-ray as it's a great bit of nostalgia.
