I loved the concept much more than any film of the character, until the 2014 reboot came out. That was the kind of story I'd wanted for years, with more focus on the heart than it being sidelined to brief glimpses.

Translation: you liked the reboot more because it wasn't ultra-violent.

That was only one reason; I meant every word of my original post. You don't need tons of gore to create memorable villains. Raymond Sellars was a great adversary who relied on his wits, much like Dick Jones from the original.

Sounds great !! Hope this gets a Blu-Ray release.

I've always been a big fan of the Robo franchise since first seeing the original when I was 13 (those were the days).

Of course everything following the first film (sequels / TV / animated / reboot) has been a series of diminishing returns but I still enjoy them anyway.

Don't be ridiculous. The original was all kinds of brilliant. The remake was a sanitised waste of a film print (or Digital file)

Well, I'll have to respectfully disagree. I never understood using extreme content to criticize others for doing the same thing. Pardon the bluntness, but its like using porn as a pro-abstinence tool; the two are mutually exclusive.

Grew up watching Robocop so the kid in me loves the original better. Not knocking the original but for me the remake is a better made film.

I like the core story of the original, but its buried under so much extreme content that I rarely watch the film at all. The second's even worse; I wanted to wash that kid's foul mouth with dish soap. Hard to believe the same guy behind that also directed The Empire Strikes Back. As for the third, it was okay in some places, but the camp factor was completely off the rails. I did like some of the early '90s TV show, and the general idea behind the Prime Directives miniseries...but the reboot was the first entry I was really happy with.

Always liked 1 and 2 specially the fight at the end of two. Three was just ok, never watched the show. Three kind of ruined it till the remake came out.

The artwork of Robodoc looks like of cartoony. I'm guessing that was intentional but not sure why they didn't use the real actors/props.

Reboots/remakes by their design are made to create competition among fans and with the original film since the filmmakers are essentially saying, "The original was good, but here's our modern take on the concept". Debating and comparing them is inevitable.
The good thing about reboots/remakes is that they bring attention back to the original films, and give fans the chance to get deluxe versions, new features, etc.

That said, I'm a fan of the original Robocop 1 and 2, and actually enjoy Robocop 2014 on its own terms.

So you recognise your love of the remake is considered extreme?

Life's too short to ***** foot around. As long as I haven't insulted you beyond belief (it's only a film opinion after all) I stand by my method. If I have insulted you, I apologise. I will continue speaking my mind though.

I only own the first one in 4K. It's not perfect (the 80s TV and computer graphics are dated, and there are a couple of frames you can definitely see some distortion), but it works. But for me, the movie has a couple of great things going for it:

1) Robocop = Jesus Christ. Confirmed already.
2) The movie's nearly perfectly symmetrical. Refer to: https://dejareviewer.com/2014/04/29/...metrical-film/ . After I read this, I was surprised about how there's a point in the movie where every event/action culminates in an opposite, yet equal-ish reaction in the back half. It's an interesting read, and I recommend any and all read it. It only furthers how incredible Robocop is in itself. Maybe this wasn't intended...maybe it was...

But I do think the reboot did have its more updated way of telling the same story. That's one of its big strengths. It more or less took what was in the original and modernized it, even fixed some things...but it still was a good experience. This is one of the rare times where the person rebooting a classic is devoted to the classic so much that the reboot is trying to respect it and do something different and reasonable with it.

I am a fan of both, but I'd give the original an edge because I love PV's work.

Robocop is one of my favorites of all time so of course I would love to see a feature length doc on it. I remember how controversial the violence was at the time. Film still stands up today.

I don't understand; what do you actually mean by that?

No worries; I didn't take offense at all.

When a film is resubmitted to the MPAA a whopping eleven times, its just insane. I've long thought they just got sick of Verhoeven bringing it back, and gave up.

Well granted I didnt see the remake so its not my place to say if it was good or bad. But I will say this, the original has been a major favorite of mine since age 4. You read right. Age 4. Its definitely graphic but much of it was at the expense of telling a good story. To have the resurrection, you needed an ultra violent execution. Same thing with the bad guys. You wanted to see these bad guys meet their ends the real hard way. The original delivers that and all these years I still get pleasure from watching this great film. IMO, one of the most underrated movies ever.

What needs to happen is the studio needs to just make a sequel and ultimately drop the shit, and just tell a proper story.
