Australia Columbo Coming to Oz

JB Hi Fi exclusive but a chance for those not able to afford the Japanese set here's a good chance to buy it a season at a time.

Excellent. A shame it's from Madman though as prices of their titles are often high. $30 or so a season would be a nice price.

This is good news, I love Columbo, I have the complete DVD set from the UK released a few years ago,but on this occasion I'll wait for a complete release. Until then, U.S. Netflix has the show in HD, so I'll watch them in HD on there for now.

Indeed, at $47 AUD, assuming the price is equal over the ten seasons, you'll have paid $470 AUD for all ten sets (assuming there are ten) likely on 30 discs or less. Meanwhile, the Japanese box costs about AUD $315 before shipping right now, and has 35 discs.

Having said that, if these are 1080p and have lossless audio, they'd be worth the extra money.

The Japanese set is 1080p although it's regular DD audio but for a 40 + year old mono show the DD audio is just fine

I think the real question is going to be is it going to be released in its entirety or abandoned after a couple seasons.

Depends on sales I would think.
The sets are not cheap and the Japanese set has been out for 4 years.
I'm surprised that any hardcore Columbo fans out there have not purchased it as it's worth every penny and despite the high price tag individual season releases are unlikely ever to work out much cheaper and it could be many years , if ever that another complete release appears.

I have many boxsets among my 1000+ Bluray collection and I would rate the Columbo set as the one I would find hardest to let go

I'll stick with the UK DVD box set for now. The picture looks just fine to me and there's no way of knowing whether or not we'll get every season released here. And they're having a laugh at that price.

You're that phelings guy using a newly created account huh? Type the exact same way and everything. Anywho, last time I checked the JP BD is actually 1080i... so you might want to think twice before you start spreading misinformation.

Different IP address, but there are two accounts on that IP.

My Panasonic tv correctly tells me when I play something that is 1080i ( and I have quite a few discs that are) but for some strange reason it's telling me that the Japanese Columbo Blurays are 1080p albeit at 30/60hz and not 24.

Maybe you need to check them again.
I'm guessing you don't even have the set.

There is no such thing as 30p or 60p Blu-ray Discs. You should familiarise yourself with the specs of Blu-ray. Any discs showing 60Hz as you state are encoded 1080/60i, so they are most definitely interlaced. Your TV's telling you the right information, you're just not interpreting it correctly.

Columbo JP is 1080i60. The bottom line is that the series looks great on Blu-ray. Like was said above, this boxset would be one of the last that I would part with.

Why does the tv tell me it's 1080p when others listed as 1080i (like the Canadian Halloween triple bill) show as 1080i as do the 50hz discs I have?
Weird.

But as Bruce says , Columbo looks great and whether its I or P makes an insignificant difference

Not sure. Definitely the case though. Apparently the new Blu-ray 4K spec will allow for other progressive frame rates but for Blu-ray the only progressive option is 24p.

I tried some discs again just to make sure.
The Halloween triple bill contains 1080i material correctly labelled on the tv , the 50hz discs I have like The Professionals and The Sweeney also showing as 1080i.

I switched the 24p option off and on in the Panasonic player settings and Columbo came up as 1080p both times.

Nevertheless , beautiful set and I would suspect it won't work out more expensive than buying season sets should they ever all get released.

It was supposed to be a limited edition when it came out in Japan but 4 years later it's still available.

Progressive just means the whole picture is refreshed each time so with 24p that's 24 times a second.

Interlaced only refreshes half the lines usually alternate odds then evens at each refresh, so with 60i that's 60 times a second.

What you can do though and what appears to be happening in this case and you also see on a lot of Scandinavian BDs which were originally filmed for TV at 25 frames a second is put a progressive image in an interlaced frame rate. This means for Columbo you refresh the whole image at a refresh point which is what makes it progressive but at the next refresh the image stays unchanged, then at the next refresh the whole image changes and so on. So the image refreshes 60 times a second but the whole image changes every other refresh so making it appear progressive.

a good example of what malcy30 says can also be seen on some releases like the UK discs of The Hunt.
