Default Itunes 4k exclusives, are they worth it?

I see that itunes has a number of fox and sony titles in 4k, but not hdr, that don't have a 4k disc release.

Wall street
Big
Spy
Moneyball
Captain Phillips
Office Space
Mrs Doubtfire
Bonds 1-24

Are these titles actually better than the blu versions and are worthy purchases? Thanks for any info.

Recently bought the Bonds and watched Dr No yesterday, now I’ve only got the DVDs to go by as a comparison but I thought it looked fantastic.
Thing is although they’re only just 4K currently, when the discs get released they’ll more than likely get HDR/DV added to them at that time which is exactly what happened with Predator and Die Hard.

I watched Dr. No yesterday and was absolutely blown away by the image. Simply stunning, one of the best 4K transfers I've seen on the Apple TV 4K to date and it wasn't even in HDR!

Apple does have some titles not available yet in UHD on other platforms, like the Bond films, but even some of those you mentioned are available in Fandango Now and/or Amazon. Vudu is the slowest of the bunch to add UHD but has been getting there. FandangoNow has a lot of Universal titles exclusive to FandangoNow and Amazon has some Amazon only Sony UHDs. It's all such a hodge podge.

If a MA eligible title in UHD goes on sale I usually grab it at $4.99 because I expect these will all eventually populate to other providers. I do not think anyone has been disappointed in UHD.

Add MGM titles Spaceballs, Mad Max (which will likely get a Scream Steelbook BD with the 4k master in the future), Rocky, The Princess Bride, Silence of the Lambs (latter two both released by Criterion on BD with the 4k remasters), and Fox titles Say Anything, The Omen (both 1976 and 2006 versions), Die Hard 2 to A Good Day to Die Hard (for now), Home Alone, and The Sandlot.

I own both Say Anything and Home Alone in 4K and they are also available to stream in 4K in the Movies Anywhere app. The Sandlot however, is not.

At some point it would be nice to have a database of what movies are available to stream in 4K at Movies Anywhere. Hopefully max streaming resolution via the Movies Anywhere App can be added to the database on here.

Rocky, Princess Bride, and Silence of the Lambs are all UHD on Vudu.
Big, Captain Philips, Mrs Doubtfire, and some others listed are UHD on FandangoNow.

I think the above shows in general any platform 'exclusives' are only due to one vendor being less keen on UHD at the get go than anything intentional. I am sure in the next year we will see other platforms keeping up with and even surpassing iTunes as many UHD titles are being added across vendors.

It may even be iTunes declines with Disney purchasing Fox, may nix UHD Fox on iTunes since Disney opposes offering UHD in iTunes due to being against free upgrades - with is polar opposite of Fox's current practice.

All the options for digital kind of gives me a headache just thinking about. Vudu is the only one I'm really familiar with and have used it here and there for a few years. But I've been pretty picky on what I've bought or converted - mostly stuff not yet on blu. But eventually a lot of them do end up with a physical blu release and then I have no use for the digital. Similarly, there are now quite a few movies in 4k on the streaming providers that are not on physical uhd and so I'm curious to buy them. But the same old song and dance - once they end up on disc I'll want the to purchase it and then have no use for the digital. It's frustrating not only to end up with digital files that I cannot sell or trade but also for movies to spread out on different platforms. I know - MA is kind of the bridge to unify them. But not every studio is on board and frankly I like the layout of Vudu and it's always my 'go to' for digital despite them being slow to upgrade hdx to uhd, not carry certain titles, or not have them in 4k when other services do. Plus, the audio is often quite compressed compare to the discs. I kind of feel guilty a lot of the time since at least half of the ones I've already bought are now idle filler after since buying the discs when they got a release.

Probably a dumb question but, once HDR/DV is added then the titles we previously bought get those added right?

Sorry, the digital stuff is new territory for me.

Generally yes your existing purchase will be upgraded but can depend on the studio as occasionally some studios relist a movie rather than upgrade what’s there already.
When they relist you’re left with the situation of either stick with what you have or buy again to get the upgrade.

How is the quality on Say Anything and Home Alone compared to Blu ray?

I watched Goldfinger the other day and couldn’t believe how great it looked in 4K. The scene around the pool where they are playing cards at the beginning of the movie was shot on a sound stage! I never picked that up before on my Blu-ray.

Home Alone shows more detail but still has a softer looking image and colors that seem more muted. It's probably worth an upgrade if you can get the code cheap but will not be a revelation... based on the UHD quality through FandangoNow.
