Hmm, the specs only show 5.1 audio. I really like the 2.0 track on the Curzon UHD(which also has 5.1).
Assuming I can get a corrected disc, I may stick with the UK version. |

Getting more iffy on HDR in black and white movies myself. Watched The Trial a few night ago and thought Orson Welles would probably be pissed. Such brightly lit skin. In Kubrick's The Killing, the grain looks electric because of the brightness. If Wim Wonders thought it looked better in SDR, maybe he had a good reason.

Maybe something is wrong with YOUR TV, because higher brightness is one of the functions of HDR and most labels and studios do use the wider range. Might be hard to notice because your eyes quickly become used to the range of light and dark (darks compensating for the brights and making image seem dimmer than if it was just the brighter parts). But I bet you have seen glowing electric grain. There are a few 4K movies like that.

I think all the colour outdoor scenes towards the end of the film would look lovely in HDR though...but like you say, if Wim Wenders didn't want it then so be it. At least he's not demanding the film be slathered in DNR like some directors. |

I'm not switching adv. contrast enhancer from Low to Off because this OLED is already dim at only 600 nits. If the scene in the apartment around eight minutes in The Killing doesn't have electric/glowing grain on your TV, then you're doing something wrong. Killer's Kiss by the same label is the same. Check the five minute area when she walks down the stairs. Think Paths of Glory is the same, but can't remember for sure.

But for a non-snarky take on this discussion, I've seen several B&W films in HDR and they look flippin' lovely to me. I've never been lucky enough to view a nitrate B&W print but the thing that people eulogise about is how intense the contrast is, how the high silver content gives the highlights a sheen unmatched by any other medium while the density is truly deep and dark. Grain doesn't necessarily enter into that conversation, true, as the very act of projektion and the duping of film makes the grain more "velvety" (© RAH) on the big screen, but HDR provides that vivacity of contrast to B&W that regular SDR video has never been able to approximate. Maybe there's something to be said for levelling off the grain in those circumstances, should it be too distracting, but it's a fine line to tread as to what is distracting to whom - especially if they're artificially juicing the contrast on their TV anyway - and so any grain management should be done with extreme care. I haven't seen all the examples you've mentioned so can't comment on what they look like at my end, but I've got Killer's Kiss so will give a spin sometime. |

On the one hand, the snarky comment about my telling him he should be seeing the same thing and on the other talking about "velvety vivacity" in grain. Yeah, would be curious to know what you think of Killer's Kiss. Jesus, dimmer, dimmer, dimmer... Will try it again when I get home. I suppose next you're gonna tell me Dolby Vision Dark is better than Dolby Vision Bright. |
