![]() ![]() ![]() NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan will release the first three seasons of Transformers G1, namely Fight! Super Robot Life-Form Transformers (戦え!超ロボット生命体トランスフォーマー) and Transformers 2010 (戦え!超ロボット生命体トランスフォーマー2010) on December 6th, 2017 as an Amazon.co.jp exclusive. The box set will go on general release on February 7th, 2018. Note that this is a 3xBD-50 set with all 95 episodes (2280 minutes), and as such, appears to be presented in standard definition NTSC video. There is only Japanese audio, no English audio, and no subtitles of any kind. Quote:

![]() No superior English audio is understandable due to the large amount of cuts and changes on the Japanese dub. The Japanese dubs of western Transformers series are usually bad and full of unnecessary changes. A proper HD G1 Transformers set would sadly need a lot of work due to the condition of the materials. There are high quality, but unfinished film masters available with a crapload of mistakes that were corrected before broadcast. All of those corrected scenes would need to be upscaled from the broadcast tape, unless a higher quality source is found. Last edited by NLScavenger; 08-04-2017 at 12:13 PM. |

Although mind, I'm not sure the Japanese would have remastered this even if it were easy. Avex apparently promised a Blu-ray box set for the Japanese version of Transformers Prime (2012) which has yet to come to fruition. Granted that Avex is not NBCUniversal, but still, that show should have been released on Blu-ray and DVD simultaneously, and it wasn't. Also, the 1986 film has only ever had one Pioneer DVD release in Japan, which is now long out-of-print and fetching insane prices. The franchise seems to be popular enough, but perhaps the Japanese studios resent the fact that it was first and foremost in the US, and as such, it is low on the totem pole. I think this is the best we're going to get, unless someone does a really good upscale of the American series, of course. I doubt anyone has the time and money to go back to the film elements, especially with all the errors. |

I wonder if there is any chance of the Workprints being used to make a BD release. S2 of the Workprints is near enough what the broadcast version was with very few mistakes. S1 has plenty of oddities but those shots could be replaced on their own with Upscaled footage. It'd be a huge job and maybe something only Shout Factory themselves would ever consider but potentially it could be amazing ... potentially being the key word.

I guess this would be an interesting novelty to own. But after watching the Shout dvd releases for the Japanese seasons after the US G1 series ended, it's actually kind of a chore to get through.
And speaking of Shout and their prior dvd releases... not only were the voices just jarring to hear after being so used to the American tracks, but Shout's subtitles were just a mess. They didn't bother creating an accurate translation of the show (they subtitled names like Diaclones as Decepticons, and Convoy as Prime, etc), and it just left people familiar with watching Japanese subs (like me) being more distracted from the changes than not. So, even if Shout did decide to license this for American release, they've got a lot of internal problems to get fixed first, imo |

Here is an update on the contents and extras. It looks like NBCUEJ really mean this to be a facsimile of the DVD sets, and to that end, the audio and video should be identical, and the bonus features from those sets are being included. This should include some English-language episodes (namely The Rebirth), but who knows if the subtitles will be forced or burnt-in, given that they are designated as extra content:

Japanese Ep 64 = Ep 15 - A Plague of Insecticons Japanese Ep 65 = Ep 22 - The Autobot Run (with awful AKOM animation) Speaking of Transformers, I've just paid my LG-50 Sixshot pre-order. Always wanted to own a Sixshot. ![]() ![]() |

Although that really only applies to Headmasters, and the changes do become jarring during Masterforce where they really started to set themselves apart from their American versions. What bothers me the most about the Shout subtitles however is shoehorning terminology from the IDW comics that most certainly never existed in either that time or continuity, like "phase-sixer" or "deployer". And the annoying thing is that at least as far as Headmasters is concerned, there's no good english subtitled version out there at all; the UK DVD suffers from, in addition to some really sloppy translation work, a massive technical foul-up where dialogue from several episodes ahead appears suddenly, and just to make it worse, it's spoiler-y as hell! Which is kind of frustrating since the Metrodome sets do hit that nice balance, keeping the American names for the characters in Headmasters but only the faction names from Masterforce onwards. |

It was a long time ago and I think the message board is now closed, but I distinctly remember Chris McFeely (the dude on the commentary tracks) expressing his anger at having sent subtitle corrections to Metrodome while it was still under production (I also recall he changed Grimlock's lines to sound more like Grimlock), only for them to go completely ignored.
