Untitled Bong Joon-Ho Korean CGI Animated Film

Bong Joon-ho will direct a Korean animation with the production company 4th Creative Party, who have worked on visual effects for The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja, Oldboy, Stoker, and The Handmaiden. The Korean outlet Naver (via Screen Daily) reports the fully CGI animation will be a deep-sea adventure, featuring creatures and humans. The story will reportedly follow an invertebrate deep-sea fish who believes he’s suffering from spinal disk herniation. (Knowing Bong, we imagine this will be nothing like Finding Nemo.)

The director has already asked an actor to join the voice cast, but didn’t disclose who. Though he’s been working on the script since 2018, production on this animation would follow after his English-language live-action film, which may be set in London.

Bong also teased another new project in the works, an animated feature that was first revealed in May. News broke at the time that Bong had been working on the animation project since 2018 and finished writing the script in January 2021. Bong revealed at Cannes the film is “inspired by a French scientific book that my wife bought and brought home. The pictures of the sea creatures were extraordinary. After that my imagination took over.”

The book is Claire Nouvian’s “The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss” (2007), of which Bong added, “The underwater colors are absolutely splendid. The starting point was the book. The story and animation flows from it. … Animation is something I really wanted to try. I think the project will be done after my next film. I have the team for special effects. It may come out in 2025 or 2026.”

Bong Joon Ho’s animated feature is "halfway done", according to reports

Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho is making significant progress on his first animated feature, which is now “halfway done”.

Seo Woo-sik, CEO of Barunson E&A, shared the update with The Korea Herald on the sidelines of Red Sea International Film Festival.

Barunson E&A, the production outfit behind Parasite and Mother, is collaborating with Bong once again on his latest project. While details remain scarce, the film is known to explore the connection between deep-sea creatures and humans, inspired by Claire Nouvian’s French novel The Deep: The Extraordinary Creatures of the Abyss.

This marks the first major update since Bong himself referenced the project in March at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, where he mentioned sketching storyboards in his hotel room. Seo confirmed this, revealing that the auteur, renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, hand-drew the entire storyboard.
