So I've finally decided since my internet isn't up to par for 4k streaming to just go the physical route as long as it lasts, therefor my thinking is kill two birds with one stone by getting one of the newer consoles, for gaming and 4k/uhd playback for films.
First question -- Is the PS5 and/or Series X good players? Is one better then the other (not a console war thread, just asking as a 4k player, I like both Microsoft and Sony so its not a deal breaker). Second Question -- Pitch Black (2000) just released on 4k, I think in the fall, love the film, the BD transfer was noticeable but not what I expected...how is the 4k/UHD version in comparison? Thanks! ![]() |

Read this very carefully before you pull the trigger.
https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.ph...&id=1603863593 I would avoid using either of these as a dedicated UHD player. |

THanks all, I guess I'll stick to Blu Ray then...I feel awful spending 200 bucks for JUST a 4k player...maybe by 2025 they'll come down, lol.

I'm starting to wonder about 4k, like is it the equivalent of Laserdisc was to vhs...I mean these systems not including all the bells and whistles plus not playing properly make for a nightmare for under 20k a year individuals......
There is little chance I can afford a PS5 disc drive edition or Series X JUST for one thing.....looks like its the Digital PS5 or S now........and honestly with the lack of in depth growth of content I don't see why either costed so much to make in the first place. Not to mention straight up 4k players (Good) being 200-300 dollars......hard market to sell...imo. |

Don't get a digital one. You're only going to be able to buy games from the Playstation or Xbox stores. Having a disc drive will give you more purchase choice. Numerous times I've found new releases at places like pawnshops for a fraction of the cost that digital is. Plus, I like to own things and not pay a premium for an extended rental. You may save $100 now but will end up spending much more in the long term. Assuming you're going to give it plenty of use.

Edit: Scratch the above. The UBP-X700 is on sale for $150 at Target right now. Great little player, only issue is you have to turn Dolby Vision on and off manually. https://www.target.com/p/sony-4k-blu...54#lnk=sametab |

For purely gaming purposes I always recommend Sony. For an all-around media decide definitely go with Microsoft. A dedicated UHD player is ideal but if you're on a budget and want an all-in one box, get the Series X.
As for Pitch Black, simply go to the dedicated thread for that release in this forum and read up on it. Lots of reliable impressions posted there. |

I have PS5 disc edition. I do not have another 4K player to compare it too.
Had to change a few settings to get Atmos and to turn off noise reduction. It played my disc fine. Disappointed no Dolby Vision. Hoping they add it with an update. I did want the digital edition and would have bought a standalone 4K player, but could only get the disc version. I can compare Pitch Black to the SD streaming version. I like it better. To me, at $20.00 US, it was worth it. |

Layer changes, menus, fast forwarding, rewinding. Any of those actions can set it off lol
Blu-ray discs are completely silent. Perhaps it will bed-in, my Sony X700 was a noisy little fella for a few weeks. It's virtually silent now. Game discs are something hilarious altogether. It'll randomly fire up the disc drive during play, despite the game being fully installed on the hard drive. I believe a firmware update is being looked at for this issue.
