Default Tcl 55” 4k tv?

This TV really intrigues me as I just want a 55” TV and the built in Roku and antenna is a great plus for me too. I have heard the picture is very good but one question I would have with this company is longevity? I currently have a 55” Samsung LED and it has lasted about 10 years and is still going strong. I paid about $1400 back when I got it. I wouldn’t want to pay $650 for a TCL only for it to last just a few years.

From what I have read TCL and Element are both good off-brands. You want to stay away from Sansui, Sylvania, Insiginia, and Westinghouse though.

I wouldn’t worry about that. The company is gaining a lot of praise for the quality and low price so they won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. I bought the Vizio M65-E0 last fall which is priced similar and considered an off brand and I’ve never been happier with a panel. In the last 10 years I’ve had 3 LED’s 2 Plasma’s and 2 projectors and my Vizio spanks them all. And the best part is I paid almost nothing for it.

I was wondering how many people on here have this TV? I have heard 1 negative is the viewing angles. How bad are they?

Check here for the TCL reviews. https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/tcl

I have had a non 4k TCL for almost 7 years and no issues with it yet. Good Luck

Vizio is in no way an off brand. Maybe 10 years ago but not now.

To the OP: For the TCL, it definitely looks like a good set and I was considering it as a stop-gap set for a few years until I could afford an OLED. I was days away from getting one when I found a screaming deal on an open box LG C7 I couldn't pass up. If you've done enough research, you know the TCL has uniformity issues (what set doesn't though) and the guys at BB said they had about a 60% return rate. Skip Amazon and get it at BB if you can for ease of return if needed. It's a darn good value for the PQ if you get a good one.

I have owned both Sylvania and Westinghouse TV's and never had any problems with them. I have a Sylvania unit I bought around 2008 as my first HDTV and it still works. Got my 4k Westinghouse on black Friday 2017 and no issues so far.

I also have an Element I bought around 2013 but the picture quality was so lackluster I put it in the spare bedroom. Bad by even cheap TV standards.

I was looking at this TV over black Friday but once I saw a review that said the motion enhancer can't be turned off, it was an easy pass.

Not sure if this is true... my parents got the TCL 55" S405 for Christmas, and we watched the blu of Dunkirk on it and it output 24p. Didn't notice any motion interpolation watching cable either.

I can't imagine that the P607 (which I assume is the TV the OP is referring to) would be any different.

"The motion performance of the S405 is decent. The response time is great, resulting in a very short trail following fast moving objects. The image flickers at all backlight settings, but since the backlight flickers at 120Hz, this is not noticeable for most people. Black frame insertion cannot be used with this TV, so fast motion will always be affected by some eye tracking blur. This TV can play 24p movies without judder, but some minor judder can be seen when playing movies from 60 fps sources, which is not noticeable to most people. The S405 offers no motion interpolation options, so it cannot produce smoothed video, also know as the soap opera effect."

TCL is not a new company, and they've been in the US TV market since 2013. In the past year, they seem to have made a heavy push to penetrate the 4K HDTV market and their sets are consistently highly rated. So I don't think you need to worry about longevity.

I bought the TCL 55P605 over the holidays and I'm extremely happy with it, although I could do without the Roku aspect since I don't use it. A more functional, non-Roku remote would serve me better, but it's not a deal breaker since I use a Harmony universal remote. Just know you'll need access to the Roku app on a smartphone to access some of the more advanced picture settings.

I do own the 55P605 in the bedroom and that is superior to the S405 no question. but as I've said before, for the money, these are very nice TV's and are perfect for the "everyday" person and they are better than some think because they tend to only look at the price tag and that TCL is not as big of a name as others.

Statistically speaking the ones I mentioned are more likely to fail or have issues.

Still thinking about this tv. One concern I have is I have had my 55” LED Samsung for 10 years. Is this TCL going to make me think I have a cheap TV compared to what I have had the last 10 years?

No, the technology is basically the same with some minor improvements in terms of the LED aspect. The only real difference is the HDR and resolution.

Definitely not. I replaced my LG 55LA7400 3D with the TCL P605 and have not regretted it. The TCL P605 exceeds the LGs picture quality in every way. I paid way more money for the LG when it released in 2013 than I paid for the TCL during Christmas. The TCL is well worth $600.

If you are still thinking about the TCL and aren't in a hurry, you may want to check out the new models revealed at CES. There are going to be more size choices, and based on what TCL has said, the 55" models should carry the same price point.
