Default Turistas

Are there any other Turistas fans who want this on Blu-ray?

I have a soft spot for this movie. Turistas was billed as a torture-horror film with the likes of the Hostel movies, but it's actually a strong wilderness adventure offering by John Stockwell, the director of Into the Blue and Blue Crush. I found this film to be vastly superior to the Hostel flicks.

Unlike other "Americans finding trouble in another country" movies, the American characters in Turistas are actually respectful of the Brazilians and of the culture, and they do not make the typical stupid character moves of such a movie. Josh Duhamel, Olivia Wilde, and Beau Garrett seem like decent people with whom one would want to hang out during a vacation, and the Australian character, played by Melissa George, is icing on the cake. The villain is a tough bit of nastiness, but he is actually driven by understandable intentions (unlike the antagonists of other such movies). The villains henchmen all have tangible and realistic reasons for doing what they do as well. Turistas is not a "torture film", thank goodness, but there is one scene that I find difficult to watch.

The movie is worth the price of admission for an outstanding escape sequence, where the characters swim through an underwater cave and survive by breathing the tiny air bubble pockets on the roof of the cave. It's a chilling and intense sequence.

The Brazilian scenery would look great in high definition.

Anyway, this is no reinvention of the wheel, but I'd love to shell out a five or so to upgrade my DVD.

I enjoyed the film quite a bit. I'd upgrade my DVD if the Blu were on sale. Like you I'd spend $5 on it. I would have spent more if I didn't already own it. It's definitely better than the "Hostel" movies. Like you said, the cave sequence is awesome and the scenery would look great on Blu.

I have to admit, Turistas is a guilty pleasure film for me. In fact, I just recorded it on HDNet Movies last night.

I agree that the outdoor scenes are beautiful and well-shot and it's not a "torture porn" movie in the strictest sense, though it is quite graphic. However, it does follow the same trite "innocent Americans are tricked into being handed over to the sadistic local and try to ecape" plot. Still, I thought it was well acted, nicely filmed, and there is plenty of beautiful people in skimpy swimwear and hard bodies for both guys and gals to enjoy. Definitely worth a watch.

Didn't Fox announce the BD a while back, and then cancel it? If it ever happens, I'd buy it. Oh yeah, and Fox should release Lake Placid and Joy Ride on blu while they're at it, too.

If you have a region free player it is available in the UK under Paradise Lost. It is region B locked. I love the movie as well. I believe this was one of the movies I really wanted and drove me to get an RF player.

I researched earlier and found the UK version on this site. Sadly, I do not have a region-free player now, but I'd love to have one to play some of my favorite foreign flicks (Forbidden Games, etc.). Maybe someday. Thanks for the heads-up!

Whatever happened to the US release of this? If I remember correctly, Fox had plans to release it, an even announced it, but they never did. A

I saw this one years ago and didn't care for it (all I remember is that it destroyed the careers of almost everyone involved). I had forgotten Olivia Wilde (an actress who deserves better projects) was in it.

I saw Turistas in the theater back in the 200X's. I thought it was an OK horror flick, but not sure I would need to have this on Blu. That being said, I will check this film out again at some point, due to the thread bump.
