So, let me get this straight. Terrible AI cover, skimping on extras and an old master? This film deserves better. It just goes to show what we can expect from Criterion nowadays.

I have the 2012 French blu-ray.

I agree their tech info seems to indicate more than likely same transfer.

Criterion, Dialing it in

That cover is awful. The risque original art is so iconic. I, too, own the French blu and will keep it. Too bad, because from a purely visual standpoint, if there’s a Fassbinder that would be a looker in 4K, it’s this one.

I still wonder about that "Dolby Stereo" at the end of the credits.

I had to look up the original poster.

Bound has even worse art (esp when contrasting with Olive’s SE, which is saying something). Rough day at C.

Then again, we have a new work of art from Tony Stella, and this vibrant cover for Victims of Sin:

I personally like the cover for Bound. It's done by Sister Hyde, who incorporates a lot of physical painting and collage elements into her work. Here she is doing some work for the cover:

Art will of course, always be subjective, so what some people love, others will hate. If you look up the artist (Astra Zero) who did the cover for Querelle, this is very much in line with the type of edgy, hyper-sexualized art they do. The fact that it's raising eyebrows, and causing controversy, means it's likely doing exactly what it was designed to do (perhaps not unlike the film itself in that regard).

Not AI https://twitter.com/astrazero/status...73863914221642

I am definitely anti-AI art, think it looks ugly and will take jobs from hard-working artists and that it should be avoided at all costs

Anyway, I think this art looks sick. Love the color tones and the weird uncanniness to it I think is really dope and got me intrigued to see the movie at all, so I'm gonna throw it on in about an hour

It looks like the artist went for a Tom of Finland style, but it doesn't really compare with the original poster art.

In any case, I love the film, though.

I have the French BD and will still get this anyway.

I love Fassbinder.

Yeah I got the Tom of Finland intention, but imho it would’ve translated better in black and white. As it is, it looks random, AI-generated stuff (even if it’s not). I get CC probably couldn’t go with the French original art, but there’s also the Warhol art, which is awesome too. Oh well.

I don’t care what the artist says, that’s AI art.

I have a Querelle to pick with that cover
Looks like a Mattel toy model rendered in a game engine.

So would this likely be the SAME master as used for AE's decade old blu or a newer one?

You could make that complaint about a lot of Criterion releases. An hourlong documentary and new interview isn’t skimping, even if it lacks the older making of.

More Fassbinder is always great and I don’t understand the complaints.

I own the UK blu-ray so it will come down to how this looks in comparison in my decision to buy. If I do end up getting it, I am still keeping the UK blu-ray for the making of doc.

I would assume Criterion are using an older master because it's approved by the DP, and/or there wasn't a newer one available for them to license.
