Default Hail Mary (Jean-Luc Godard)

Coming soon from Cohen Media. Street date: January 7th.

Hail Mary Blu-ray

Quote:
Denounced by the Pope and banned and boycotted worldwide, this surprisingly serene and lyrical work translates the Virgin Birth into tangible contemporary terms, with Mary as a teenage basketball-playing gas-station attendant who receives the Annunciation by jetliner. Mary is a beautiful yet ordinary teenager who vows to maintain her chastity. Following a warning from an angel, a confused and innocent Mary unexpectedly falls pregnant and is forced to wed her taxi-driving boyfriend Joseph. He, in turn, must love his virgin bride from a distance, revering her without touching her. Forced to face a shocking reality, Mary and Joseph along with their family and friends must struggle to cope as the provocative theme unfolds. Hail Mary is a sensational and bold work from French master director Jean-Luc Godard which touched off an uproar of protest heard around the world. Starring Myriem Roussel, Thierry Rode, Philippe Lacoste, and Juliette Binoche.

Back in the late-1980s, when I was in high school, my Methodist church minister went into a long tirade about Hail Mary during a sermon, and about how he resented the filmmakers who would make such a vile and offensive movie.

Naturally, I became curious, and wanted to know more about the movie, but could not find any further information in those lonely pre-internet days in the small rural Georgia city where I lived. Sort of funny that most of us in rural Georgia would have never heard of that movie in the first place had the minister not launched into a tirade about it, but that's another musing for another thread in another forum.

I had forgotten all about this until the announcement of this Blu-ray.

Would love to see First Name: Carmen and some of the harder-to-find early '90s stuff like Nouvelle Vague.

I watched this last night and I was so moved that I had to post my thoughts. First, I know that devout Catholics will most likely hate this film. I think the nudity may not be the problem as much as the very human Mary that Godard has given us. For the Marie (Mary) of Godard is very human indeed. She has doubts; fears; desires the same as you or I. The story is how she and those close to her cope with the great responsibility that God has seen fit to bestow upon her; and it is about how she fulfills her role in God's plan. I found it at times very moving and the lead actress was perfect. She can display more emotion with a glance, a smile, or a frown than most actors or actresses that I have ever seen. Highly recommended.

I am a born-again Christian and I am also a movie lover. I say this not to start an argument for or against religion - I say it only to help others who might be interested in watching this movie. This movie of a very human Mary in modern times touched me very much. I would highly recommend it to others as long as they know going in what they are going to see.

I saw that the Cohen version of this has gone OOP, so thinking of trying to import the Japanese one. Can anyone vouch for English subtitles?

Does anyone have any info or can speculate on where this might be going? Kept meaning to get it from Cohen but waited too long. Damn.
