Back in the late-1980s, when I was in high school, my Methodist church minister went into a long tirade about Hail Mary during a sermon, and about how he resented the filmmakers who would make such a vile and offensive movie.
Naturally, I became curious, and wanted to know more about the movie, but could not find any further information in those lonely pre-internet days in the small rural Georgia city where I lived. Sort of funny that most of us in rural Georgia would have never heard of that movie in the first place had the minister not launched into a tirade about it, but that's another musing for another thread in another forum. I had forgotten all about this until the announcement of this Blu-ray. |

Would love to see First Name: Carmen and some of the harder-to-find early '90s stuff like Nouvelle Vague.

I watched this last night and I was so moved that I had to post my thoughts. First, I know that devout Catholics will most likely hate this film. I think the nudity may not be the problem as much as the very human Mary that Godard has given us. For the Marie (Mary) of Godard is very human indeed. She has doubts; fears; desires the same as you or I. The story is how she and those close to her cope with the great responsibility that God has seen fit to bestow upon her; and it is about how she fulfills her role in God's plan. I found it at times very moving and the lead actress was perfect. She can display more emotion with a glance, a smile, or a frown than most actors or actresses that I have ever seen. Highly recommended.
I am a born-again Christian and I am also a movie lover. I say this not to start an argument for or against religion - I say it only to help others who might be interested in watching this movie. This movie of a very human Mary in modern times touched me very much. I would highly recommend it to others as long as they know going in what they are going to see. |
