And now all of Terry Zwigoff's films will get a hi-def release.

EDIT: Scratch that, there's that documentary about a jazz musician that's still only on DVD.

Interesting. MVD? Never heard of this label. Are their releases reliable? Are they made on demand and why isn't Sony releasing this?

Here's the thread for the label (actually, looking at it, it looks like there are two MVD sublabels, the thread is named after the Rewind, but I think it also covers this new "Marquee" as well, at least in the conversation):
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=296775

They more or less started releasing discs in 2018; I'm sure the thread has people who have bought some of their discs, though quickly scanning I didn't spot any disc reviews. Unlike Sony, their discs are neither MOD nor burned, so it's presumably better for MVD to release this than Sony.

Interesting. Well, this is a pretty good film, so count me in.

I loved this movie, a precursor to his cruder works to come. Also, Jim Broadbent is ridiculous and awesome in this.

Wow, I thought Bad Santa came after this. Just looked it up, Art School Confidential was the last film he made.

The franchise film era has been tough on Zwigoff. He mentions a bunch of projects he almost got made here: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood...anta-interview

Sony doesn't own the movie anymore, it was during a deal between MGM and Sony back in 2005-06

The MVD Marquee collection is a low priced line.

Either they are:

Reprints of previously out of print releases

or

Blu-rays that include the previous archival special features missing on the original release.

The existing video and audio masters will also be reused for these releases.

This was one of those titles on DVD you would find at Deals. Good times.

Seriously. Louie Bluie, Crumb and Ghost World are all stone cold classics, and Bad Santa was a box office success. I know Art School Confidential wasn't popular with critics or audiences (and I haven't seen it) but it could be Manos, the Hands of Fate and Zwigoff would still deserve to be making movies.

ASC is definitely an underrated indy film, and one of my favorite 200X movies. Too bad it's not more well known/appreciated these days, but the Blu release may change this somewhat. I still need to reach the comic this film is based on - maybe one of these days...

While I don't put Bad Santa up there with Zwigoff's other films, I felt it was hilarious, crude, and over-the-top - and one of my favorite comedies. The fact that this did well at the box office is almost beside the point, since I would have liked this either way; I did see this twice at the movie theater - I felt it was that funny. I'm actually surprised this was a big-budget Hollywood film, since the story was somewhat subversive - in a comic way (i.e., having Santa be a lecherous drunk, etc.) Great storyline, with perfect casting. Even the supporting actors (including the late Bernie Mac & John Ritter) were hilarious
