Count me in for a Blu of Romero's Martin as well (especially since the DVD is OOP). Excellent & underrated horror flick. Liked the late '70's Pittsburgh setting & the extremely disturbing storyline.

Thanks for the info. This is good to know, but unfortunate. We may never see a Blu (or even a DVD re-release) at this point. The market for Martin (and films like this) is there, but small. So, I doubt anyone would want to spend a lot of $ to license this, unless they thought the return would be high.....

Well, at this point one more disapoint doesen't make any difference. Sooner or later it must get the decent release.

Saw this movie for the first time a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Great little twist on vampires. Was disappointed to find out it's another one that Richard Rubinstein has control of, making a Blu-ray likely difficult.

Recently re-watched Martin. I don't watch this too often because I'm waiting for a possible Region 1 Blu release, especially since the current print is not that great. However, since that may never happen, now's a good time of year to revisit this great '70's flick by GAR.
Very impressive film; the editing is especially well-done, and features a lot of quick cuts & b&w "flashbacks"/dream sequences, that are used to great effect. Though I wouldn't call this GAR's best movie, I find it to be his most unsettling one. When I first saw the film years ago, I thought that Martin was just extremely disturbed/mentally ill, and that though he honestly thought he was a "vampire" and was the reincarnation of an ancient vampire line - but that he was just crazy. Obviously, in the film - his "cousin" (the older guy that looks & dresses like Colonel Sanders - LOL) perpetuated this belief by calling his "Nosf.", trying to ward him off with crosses & garlic, etc. However, during this second viewing - I'm wondering if "Martin" is actually what he thinks he is - i.e., a modern day "vampire" who is the reincarnation of a much older vampire line - hence the b&w "flashbacks" he "remembers" from events hundreds?! of years in the past re: running through graveyards & being pursued, encountering women with candelabras in dark hallways, etc. In the present day, he obviously has no special powers nor any unusual vulnerabilities (sun doesn't really bother him, no problems with garlic and/or crosses, etc.)....but, it could be that since he's a "modern" vampire he has "adapted" to modern life/times, etc. Anyway, just my new take on a very unusual, bizarre, and horrific horror movie. Yes, I got this. It’s a beautiful package. The film is indeed the old HD master made from a 35mm print, which isn’t pristine—some blemishes here and there, as well as jittering in a few scenes—but it looks better than any DVD, including the excellent Arrow release. The source for the Arrow might have been different/better, I haven’t A/B’d them. For instance the color on the Arrow might be deeper. But overall this is a very pleasing true HD scan with healthy grain and obviously no DNR (was DNR around in 2004?).
The deluxe edition is worth getting, too, as it comes with a quad-style poster (12.5x9.25”), four postcards, and a booklet in Japanese. All housed in a very sturdy slipcase box. Disc extras include a terrible looking SD presentation of the movie in original 4:3, the 2004 retrospective documentary “Making Martin: A Recounting”, the trailer (SD), TV spot (rather poor quality SD), 2 radio spots (60s & 30s), and an HD photo gallery. The commentary from the 2004 disc featuring Romero, Savini, et al. is on the disc as well as the 5.1 remix English track and a newly created Japanese dub. |
