United Kingdom The Turin Horse (2011) - Béla Tarr [3rd September / Artificial Eye]

Release Date 3rd of September 2012

But whatever did happen to the horse? This film, which is Tarr's last, follows up this question in a fictionalized story of what occurred. The man who whipped the horse is a rural farmer who makes his living taking on carting jobs into the city with his horse-drawn cart. The horse is old and in very poor health, but does its best to obey its master's commands. The farmer and his daughter must come to the understanding that it will be unable to go on sustaining their livelihoods. The dying of the horse is the foundation of this tragic tale
I'm not sure how this one will compare to the US Cinema Guild edition (region free), but it is great to see a UK release for one of cinema's greatest auteurs last film. It makes me want to cry that there will not be another Tarr film

I sincerely hope this isn't the only Tarr film we will see on Blu-ray, and would pay big money to see Satantango, or Werckmeister on Blu-ray.

Image and audio wise they should be pretty much identical, extras wise CG is the way to go.

Since Artificial Eye are releasing this we'll probably get next to no extras, a trailer, maybe a 9-15min interview with Tarr.

This truly is an amazing movie. I had held off seeing anything made by Bela Tarr, since his movies apparently were so slow (his name also makes his work sound more avant garde than they probably are). So with that in mind, I decided to watch The Turn Horse, and I was blown away by it. It's slow and there's plenty of repetition, but I never found it boring at all. I have no idea whether the movie was true to its period (did it even have one) but the people are just alive in this, and that accomplished with hardly any dialogues. Very impressive, and I definitely need to check more of Tarr's movies.
Any word on more work of Tarr on Blu-ray, or am I asking an obvious question?

Caught this at the cinema last night. Absolutely incredible. Certainly not for everyone and I could see people easily dismissing it if they're not in the right frame of mind for it but I found it powerful, moving and beguiling. You truly find yourself engaged in the plight of these two people through the most simple observations and actions.

Yes, CG is the way to go.
The UK Edition only includes a trailer and the short film "Hotel Magnezit".
The audio commentary, the press conference and Regis Dialogue with Bela Tarr are missing.

Bought this recently with the BD of Sátántangó and was surprised to see that it has a much higher video bit rate compared to that of the CG release, 35 Mbps vs 20 Mbps.

Wow, I wish I'd seen this thread sooner. I was not aware that there was another blu-ray release of this movie aside from the Artificial Eye edition, which I literally just bought a couple weeks ago. The extras on the Cinema Guild disc alone look like they justify a double-dip.
