I am not a big horror fan but I watch these around Halloween along with the 30 film Universal Monsters box set. Not horror but The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus plus the animated Garfield's Halloween TV special and the Great Pumpkin are musts. I also watch David Lynch's Twin Peaks every year in October going all the way back to making VHS dubs when it first aired. Of course now I have Fire Walk With Me and The Return to squeeze in during the month.

These are not necessarily my top 20 favorite horror movies of all time, but more like my top 20 horror movies that I like to watch during Halloween.

The Shining and The Thing are more like winter (snow) movies to me, while Alien is set in space, so despite being some of my most favorites, they aren't films that capture the Halloween spirit as much for me as the following (in no particular order):

1. Halloween (1978)
2. Halloween II (1981)
3. Trick 'r Treat (2007)
4. Creepshow (1982)
5. House on Haunted Hill (1959)
6. Carnival of Souls (1962)
7. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
8. Return of the Living Dead (1985)
9. Night of the Demons (1988)
10. Fright Night (1985)
11. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
12. The Evil Dead (1981)
13. Hellraiser (1987)
14. Black Sunday (1960) /Black Sabbath (1963)
15. Suspiria (1977)
16. Demons (1985)
17. Sleepy Hollow (1999)
18. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
19. Nosferatu (1922)
20. Any Universal Classic Monster movie (Dracula, Frankenstein, Bride, Wolf Man, etc. from the 1930s to 1950s)

Big factor as to what comes on is whether others are with me or not, but otherwise here's my list by preference:

1. The Shining
2. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
3. Young Frankenstein
4. The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
5. The Thing (1982)
6. Psycho
7. Halloween
8. Hausu
9. The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
10. Nightmare Before Christmas
11. Night of the Living Dead
12. Kwaidan
13. Bram Stoker's Dracula
14. ReAnimator
15. The Ring (2002)
16. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)
17. Vertigo
18. Dracula (1931)
19. Ed Wood
20. The House by the Cemetery

Frequently, though, I'll throw on something older and low budget, like C.H.U.D., which I'll then never see again.

I lot of what I watch for October/Halloween is based on what I have or haven't watched recently, so it varies. I also like to try and catch some movies on TCM, especially ones I haven't seen before, and maybe rent some others from Netflix.

But of course, there are some things I always try to make room for:

* Halloween 1-7
* Sleepy Hollow
* The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
* The Monster Squad (my brother and I usually watch this on Halloween night)
* It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
* Garfield's Halloween Adventure
* various Hammer films
