We saw the movie on its opening day last week and loved it. Having seen the original show on Broadway and again by a very good regional company in the SF Bay Area several years later we were anxious to see see how well Rob Marshall could translate it to the big screen. He hit a home run. Even with a few modifications, fully approved by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine, the movie was very true to the stage production. Sondheim's score is one of his best. The audience loved it, got all of the big laugh lines and applauded several of the musical numbers. Meryl Streep is a bloody wonder as the witch and displayed a powerful and dramatic singing voice that was never fully employed in Mama Mia. Her performance gave new dimensions to the witch's character and her motives. Emily Blount was outstanding as was Chris Pine. He and Billy Magnussen's duet on Agony had the audience howling with laughter. The rest of the cast including the constantly adorable Anna Kendrick and James Corden were top rate as well. All in all, this is one of the most successful movie adaptations of a Broadway show in recent memory and the Blu-ray will be a must buy as soon as it comes out.

I went to see this film with lil knowledge of the main source, loved the "I Wish", "Giants In The Sky", "Hello Lil Girl" and "Your Fault/Last Midnight" sequences, well done, I plan to pick up a copy of the Broadway film next week.
I have a feelin Rapunzel had a medium size role in the orignal, what songs/scenes were deleted from the orignal? I read the Witch had a new song written by the orignal team but it was deleted along with an another song/sequence (I think) We'll definitly see the witch's new/deleted song, maybe a commentary plus a 15 min behind the scenes and a (long shot) possible "legacy of Grimm/fairy tales yet somethin like that was on Once Upon A Time's 1st season release Guessin Witch Meryl will be the cover for the Blu/digital edition while a simple woods image will be the dvd cover Last edited by Mason_Ireton; 01-04-2015 at 12:27 AM. |

Also I find it interesting that the witch had a new song cut from the movie. Especially considering there was duet between her and Rapunzel that was included in the revival, which didn't make it into the movie. It was a really nice song that helped show their relationship and would have gave Rapunzel more to do in the movie. |

I'm curious what character you played? Also if you did the production in middle school did you include the second act? I hear most schools cut that out entirely.

I think it's a possibility about the Blu cover, but what my previous post was referring to, is I find it very unlikely that they wouldn't have characters on the DVD cover. That would just be silly.

Yea i read that Rapunzel's fate was changed from the play/tale, so I was ok with that, was hopin she'd have scenes with the Baker towards the middle.
For some reason, I couldn't help but think the film is Disney's answer to Mamma Mia and Chicago yet I enjoyed it, saw it as a tribute to Disney's Silly Symphony series plus I was expecting Lil Red and Bad Wolf sing Who's Afraid Of Big Bad Wolf but that was before I learned the film is based on a Broadway production. Star Power expect my review in a while, I only saw Lion King and Beauty/Beast live so I'm sure I'll enjoy the orignal play. Here's the link for things that were alternated for the film, it's under stage to screen and mentions Witch Meryl's new song http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Into_...ods_%28film%29 I'd be surprised that Disney does an extended edition with the new song Couldn't help but noticed that the boy who plays Jack, looks like Sean Marshall (Pete's Dragon) he'd be perfect for the remake of Pete's Dragon I'd go with these 2 posters for the Blu/digital cover http://www.impawards.com/2014/into_the_woods_ver12.html http://www.impawards.com/2014/into_t...ver18_xlg.html Last edited by Mason_Ireton; 01-04-2015 at 04:07 AM. |

The one song that I really missed from the show was "No More" sung by the baker and his father. It is a great number that Chip Zien and Tom Aldredge did to perfection on stage. I did, however, appreciate the lush orchestral version of the song that was used in the movie after the baker meets his father in the woods. It served its purpose but was, I'm sure, more meaningful to those who had seen the stage production at any time.

My sons were in a high school production of it..they played the princes. They did both acts. It was nearly 3.5 hours long...Much of the audience thought it was over after the first act, and they had to have the narrator actually say something to prevent them from leaving after intermission.
