Default The Masque of the Red Death

EDIT (06/04/25): Mikey Madison is in talks to replace Sydney Sweeney.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Quote:
A24 and Picturestart are teaming up on The Masque of the Red Death, a wildly revisionist and darkly comedic take on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe and are in negotiations with Sydney Sweeney to star. Charlie Polinger is writing and directing with A24 handling domestic distribution. Polinger will also executive produce the pic along with Lucy McKendrick.

The original Poe short story follows a prince who attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. Details behind this new take are being kept unde wraps. Sources say the film will shoot this year.

The Euphoria and White Lotus star had herself another busy 2024 that included the smash hit comedy Anyone But You and the Neon horror thriller Immaculate. She also had the HBO pic Reality which earned her a Critics Choice Award. She is currently filming the Lionsgate adaptation of the hit novel The Housemaid. She is repped by Paradigm Talent Agency and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller, Gellman, Meigs & Fox.

Playwright, director, and auteur Polinger is currently in post onhis eagerly anticipated film The Plague, which was made independently and stars Joel Edgerton. He is represented by UTA, Anonymous Content, and Kim Jaime at Jackoway Austen. +

I wonder how much of Poe's DNA will find its way into this adaptation.

The story in the book was very good and horror themed. The Vincent Price film I'd have to watch again, but it wasn't scary if that was an intent.

Should be interesting to see how this turns out.

The original Vincent Price film mixed in stuff from other Poe stories like Hop Frog (renamed Hop Toad) to flesh it out, the original story which is very short doesn't have an awful lot to it other than the setup and ending. So wonder how they're going handle it.

Just an studio whose output has been overrated as well as being full of itself as "real cinema" and milking it's status for the most outlandish overpricing like a 65 dollar cookbook and 5 dollar mediocre chocolate bars.

I assume you've seen them all, or most of, to make such a claim. Because they have an incredible amount of film that arent "overrated", so I think it's unlikely that you've seen most of them based on your assessment.

Optional merchandise is completely optional, so I don't see why that bothers you so much. You're a big MCU fan and they put out insane amounts of ridiculously priced merch in FAR greater amounts.

Tried their biggest films and was unimpressed with the majority of most of them so figured what was the point of going through the rest.

Also, considering the poor casting of Doom to say the least, I've basically given up on the MCU so not sure why that factors in here.

Here's the original story brilliantly read by Gabriel Byrne from the album Closed On Account Of Rabies.

A24 releases every single genre in existence, so dismissing a film based on the studio is kinda silly. If they ONLY put out one type of film, you'd have a point.

I mentioned MCU because you complained about a24 putting out overpriced merchandise as a reason you don't like them, yet you own tons of MCU films which are essentially merchandise printers. It's just kind of hypocritical since they release insane amounts of cheaply produced hyper expensive merch themselves.

"Tons" and it's just two or three out of like 35 installments not counting the shows.......

And like I said, I've seen a big chunk of A24's movies, didn't like most of them, and figured what's the point of watching more from them? It's really not that hard to understand it nor rolling one's eyes when they sell a 70 buck cookbook for like 15 recipes.

Anyway, Sydney Sweeney in Masque Of The Red Death. Hope the atmosphere is good and they don't have it be in modern times.

The project has been described as a quintessential A24 movie, one that likely will include eye-brow raising, meme-able scenes that should resonate among the TikTok class.
All in all, Syd dodged a bullet.
