I hope this documentary serves John Belushi better then the horrible film adaptation of Bob Woodward's book, Wired. Belushi deserves a solid factual-based documentary rather than some sordid account.

I've tried watching that film twice and I always turn it off at the 45/60 minute mark. Not only is it absolutely tawdry, but because they couldn't get permission from SNL to perform his sketches, you'd be forgiven for wondering why Belushi was so highly regarded if you didn't know anything about him. Michael Chiklis is lucky to still have a career after that.

That film is terrible. Granted Woodward's book is gritty and spares nothing in its account of some of the more lurid aspects of Belushi's life, but at the same time Belushi was also more than the excesses that led to the end of his life. I'd like to see more about Belushi's talent and perhaps what went on behind the scenes of SNL and some of the film shoots, but also a marked focus on what made Belushi such a great talent and beloved performer.

I watched this on SHOWTIME last night. It shed light on a lot of John's life but I felt like it should have told more. It's very informative and it's great to hear from a lot of the people who knew him as a kid, as a teenager, as an improv actor starting out, all the way through his rise to fame and his downfall. Definitely worth watching.
