Default Samsung "just Scan"?

Just got a samsung le40m86bd it has a feature called just scan which shows the "exact signal
" sent over hdmi i compared it to 16:9 on the tv.with just scan the black bars get narrower and shows more picture to either side if its set to 16:9 the black bars are slightly further apart but the picture is cut off on the right hand side.if i choose just scan is it distorting the image?

"Just scan" directly maps the 1920x1080 pixels on the BD to the 1920x1080 pixels on the LCD display. Keep it turned on for the most accurate image reproduction.

What I don't understand is why _every_ fixed pixel display isn't able to do this by default. I mean, why should there be overscan at all -- doesn't the display circuitry "know" where its own pixels are when it processes the image? (For CRT overscan is understandable.) Can anyone enlighten me here?

ive got a samsung too. just scan is the correct setting to have it on. that shows the image EXACTLY how it is on the blu-ray disc. Going to 16:9 distorts the image by blowing up the image and cutting off the sides.

The only reason I've ever been able to think of is that some content still has "garbage" at the edge, particularly at the top, so overscan is intentionally introduced to avoid having pixel-based displays show issues in content that aren't visible on CRT displays (which might otherwise lead to returns as customers say "but my old TV didn't have those funny little white bits at the top of the screen").
