Default Brokeback Mountain release date?

Anyone know the true release date for Brokeback Mountain. Thissite says 3/3 but Amazon says 3/10.

Originally it was March 3, then was moved. DVD EMPIRE still has it listed as March 3 and shipped my copy already. I'll probably have it tomorrow.

Does anyone think we'll be getting a 4K release? It could do with a remaster anyway.

Doubtful it will get a remaster. Besides, there is nothing wrong with the current edition.

It's certainly not the worst transfer I've seen from the time, but it wasn't the best either. They could make a lot of improvements over the current release. I personally think it deserves another remaster.

Still remember the local protests when this movie hit theaters, which is pretty dumb considering it was rated R and aimed at an adult audience. It was banned in a whole lot of towns and some people had to drive a good ways to find a theater. Probably the last movie I can think of that drew a considerable amount of heat.

That type of thing wouldn't fly anymore in today's age, the protesters wouldn't survive the outrage.

I think what kills this current blu-ray is the pathetic selection of extras more than anything.

Haha. That's true! I would really appreciate a commentary track from Ang Lee, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway when the film finally gets re-released. It's such a shame that Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal didn't record one originally. Considering how much the film changed their careers at the time.

I don't know about that. It'd probably still be 'banned' in some of the places around here. I heard of people fired from their jobs for saying they voted for Hillary or had their car key'd, etc.

If this gets a new release I'm almost certain it will be a UHD release, or at least I hope it will.

No, you're thinking the opposite, there's such a push for diversity and political correctness in today's age that if this movie were to be released now it would be celebrated like Moonlight.

Umm, I don't think that's actually true. If anything I've heard of Trump supporters being ostracized for being open about their political opinions.

Don't jump down my throat though, don't want to derail the thread with a political debate

Yeah, I was just pointing out how it was in this area. I loved Brokeback Mountain then and now and hope this gets a new 4k scan blu or uhd eventually.

Does anyone who has the Aussie release of this know if it's any better than the US one in terms of possibly not having DNR

Having never seen this before, I finally got around to it today.

Since it's a Western movie I just had to check it out and even moreso as it was seen 'controversial,' but personally it didn't feel controversial, just slightly different than other Westerners. Instead of husbands cheating on their wives with women, it's with men.

My favorite part was that it felt real, genuine without anyone overacting or shoving it in one's face because "You see, I'm gay!" (the stereotypical). Great movie all in all.

By the way, during the whole movie I knew I recognized the actor co-starring with Gyllenhaal, yet I couldn't because he played his role so flawlessly.

Wow, almost seventeen years since this was released. I remember the public outrage more than the movie itself. Been wanting to see this one again.

Interesting. What I would say I remember most is actually the lack of outrage, which I found to be a cheeringly progressive sign.

Ang Lee and James Schamus even intentionally reproduced the Titanic poster, they said at the time, so that there would be absolutely no question that this was a love story, which was considered a bold choice, and nobody complained.

I'd love to see a UHD of this, Ang Lee is fortunately well represented on the format, 6 of his 14 films have UHDs.

Criterion sounds like a good home for the movie. This was a very bold project of its time. As I posted about previously, there was local outrage in the area. People did not want to publicly admit to seeing the movie and were afraid of the potential backlash. Some people were trying to keep it from reaching theaters. All the bashers very likely did not see the movie. It was clouded with so much controversy. And it of course did not win the best picture oscar. It's one of the last really controversial major motion pictures I can recall. A 4k uhd would be great.

There was more outrage over Joker than this, but maybe that's the internet's penchant for amplifying and magnifying the most annoying people. Nearly every other movie these days has a group of angry ppl throwing a fit about it! lmao

I was 12 when this film came out and I remember seeing talk about the controversy on TV but don't recall anything locally or anyone I knew. My parents never commented on it. There was parody on TV and in a few other movies since then, which I recall being relatively lighthearted.

In regards to my personal relationship with the film; I'd been on the receiving end of plenty gay bullying (living in the St Louis area at the time, not that it matters though) so it was odd seeing a movie existed about this thing people got on me about. A few years later I saw it on HBO and can't recall if I even watched the whole thing but I didn't care for it very much. I need to revisit it one of these days!
