Default What is DNR?

more precisely, can someone tell me what Dolby noise reduction does? when it's lightly used/not all VS Heavily used? and also is it a lack of DNR that causes This ↓ ↓ ↓

(frame from a UHD movie more specifically a half lit wall)
Those sort of meshy blocks of either pixels or is it film grain? i rarely (or mostly i never noticed if there is) seen anything like this on newer digital movies.
(Also if you show me an example of No DNR vs DNR don't use 4k77 as an example please but an official release)

(to be fair its a Jpeg and there is some compression but whenever i watch a UHD i still notice these especially on close ups(of faces, surfaces etc.))

It's digital noise reduction not Dolby noise reduction

The Predator "remaster" is arguably one of the worst examples of applied DNR to any film, ever. All they had to do, was to clean up the image and improve the overall image for HD.

Some studios are of the conviction, that people don't want to watch visible film grain when watching their movies at home, hence they introduce and sometimes use a DNR knob that goes all the way to 11. On film classics. Sigh.

To be fair, that’s an egregious shot in a film with notably heavy DNR. I think DNR can have its place for some films if used lightly and strategically, but if is just heavy use throughout a film’s transfer, there are major issues.

Yes. It's a tool that like most tools can be used well, or used badly. I think most film fans who understand DNR would always err on the side of using it as little as possible, because once you bake it in to an encode you're almost always losing unrecoverable detail to some extent.

And now, that paragraph again with some heavy 'DNR' by way of analogy:

Yys Itss a tooo thht llke moss tooos cnn bb ussd wlll or ussd baddy I thnk moss fllm fnns whh undrrstnnd DNR woood alwyys rrr nn the sidd of ussng it ss ltttle ss pssslble becaase oncc yuu baka it nn tt nn nncode yooro almoss slways lsslng nnrecvvrrable dttall to smme xxtxnt

If applied to your 007 polls, Connery would win each contest except one.

In the case of Predator, I'm glad they did it. It improves the 3D .

I didn't think it was that hard to follow. If you remove the noise, Connery wins.
