United Kingdom Midsomer Murders

I asked a while back about having the thread for Midsomer Murders in the TV Shows sub-forum moved to the UK TV Shows sub-forum, but sadly that didn't happen. Hence why I'm starting this thread.

As far as I'm aware, there are still two new episodes left to be shown by ITV from the 21st series/season. And I read a Facebook post earlier this week by the fanpage for the show, saying that a 22nd series/season has started filming. Which is great news, even though I just haven't got used to John Barnaby's current detective partner. For me, my favourite era of the show is still the Tom Barnaby and Ben Jones era (Ben Jones was played by Jason Hughes).

I was late to the Midsomer party.

Believe I started watching it during the DS Dan Scott (John Hopkins) era; so I've got a lot of catching up to do - although some plots do sound a bit silly.

Took me a few episodes to get used to Neil Dudgeon's John Barnaby.

Fun fact:
[Show spoiler]Dudgeon has played a suspect
in a Nettles episode

It's always on ITV3 in the afternoon, although there have been some edited episodes for the murders (I remember an obvious edit as we should have followed gazes to a hanged person).

It's good news:

Yes, Neil Dudgeon played a gardener in an early episode. He debuted as John Barnaby in an episode from the Tom Barnaby and Jones era (they headed to Brighton along with a group of people, including a character played by the actor who played Richard Hillman on Corrie, on a case. Both Barnabys worked together on the case).

Fast forward to John Nettles' final episode "Fit for Murder" (where Barnaby and Jones investigate a death at a health spa). There were two alternative endings
[Show spoiler](I think Neil Dudgeon (as Tom Barnaby) was in both endings, one of which saw him answer the phone before starting a case, which was the introduction to him taking over as the lead detective on the show).

I wasn't that keen on coroner Kam, but I've liked Annette Badland's contribution to the show since she joined (particularly like her sense of humour). Kam's predecessor Kate I quite liked, but the best coroner on the show for me has been George (he was the longest-running coroner character on Midsomer). Toby Jones played a coroner, in place of George, for a few episodes back in the early era of the show (the Barnaby and Troy era).

Steedeel, you mentioned in the VS thread the actress Angela Pleasance. I'm sure I've seen her in an episode of Midsomer Murders. Having checked her IMDb filmography, yes she did appear in an episode (an early episode called "Death of a Hollow Man").

Watching tonight, an episode from the ninth series, called "Death in Chorus". Guest stars include Peter Capaldi. This episode's story revolves around a choir who are taking part in a competition.

Watched a few nights ago an episode which it turns out I hadn't seen before (from the (John) Barnaby and Nelson era), "Wild Harvest" (they investigate the death of someone who was smeared with truffle oil and mauled to death by a wild boar). Very good episode, but at least it was easier to understand than the episode I watched yesterday, called "Murder by Magic".

Following on from the above quoted post, an update about these episodes. The first of them (the penultimate episode of the series/season) premieres on ITV this coming Sunday night at 8 pm. It's called "Sting of Death".

Following on from my previous post, the last episode in the current series is callled "With Baited Breath".

I'm hoping we'll get the new series later on this year (saw something on TV Wise which suggests we will get some or all of the 22nd series/season later this year.

Midsomer has in the past had ridiculous plots, and last night's new episode was no different. But "The Sting of Death" was especially daft. Yet it somehow still made sense (especially the killer's motive).

The plot for next Sunday's season finale sounds interesting
[Show spoiler](it reminds me of the Loch Ness monster).

There was an article in the local newspaper this past Saturday about the return of Midsomer Murders, which said it was back for four episodes. This suggests we'll be getting the first two episodes of the series which started filming last October.

Last night's new episode closed the season on a high note. It was less barmy than the previous episode. Some of the story was difficult to follow (especially towards the end), but I did like the
[Show spoiler]misdirection with what was in the lake (yes, one development was similar to another episode from not too long ago, but there was a slight variation on it, so it's only a slight nitpick). The first half of the episode was a different set-up than normal, which helped to give a fresh feel to the story.

Very good episode I thought.

Next Sunday night's new episode (the first of the new series/season) is called "The Wolf Hunter of Little Worthy".

Haven't yet watched this past Sunday night's new episode of Midsomer Murders, but this coming Sunday night's new episode (the second of the new series) is called "The Stitcher Club". This will be the last new episode for a while.

Finally watched the opening episode of the new series tonight, "The Wolf Hunter of Little Worthy". This was a bit of a strange one, and at times hard to follow. It was still very good though, and I didn't guess the killer's identity
[Show spoiler](their appearance reminded me of the killer in the slasher Deadly Dreams (from the movie poster artwork I've seen).

Among the guest stars was actress Louise Jameson (it's a pity John Nettles hadn't appeared in this episode. They worked together for a few years on the detective drama series Bergerac).

Watched this past weekend, the second new episode of the current series, "The Stitcher Club". It was a bit hard to follow at times, but it wasn't as barmy as the previous episode. Yet I could sort of understand how it ended (when
[Show spoiler]the culprit was revealed).

Hopefully it isn't long before the remaining two new episodes of the current series are premiered.

Following on from the above quoted post (specifically the part in bold). I checked the Wikipedia page for Midsomer Murders recently (they're not always accurate (like the IMDb), and discovered there are in fact six episodes in the current, twenty-second series of the show. Premiering on ITV next Sunday night is the third episode, "Happy Families". Hopefully the channel will show the remaining three episodes afterwards.

It remains to be seen if it ends up being any different, but I suspect the new episode airing this coming Sunday night will be just the one, with the remaining three episodes being shown next year (haven't read anything yet about whether the show has been renewed for a twenty-third series). In one of the new issues of the TV magazines today, it suggests we're only getting one further new episode from the current series of Midsomer Murders.

Default Episode "Happy Families"

Watched this episode (originally shown in the UK five weeks ago) last night. Thought it was very good, continuing the quality run of episodes in the twenty-second series. Since Annette Badland joined Midsomer Murders, and the (to me) awkward chemistry between Winter and pathologist Kam ended (when the actress who played Kam left the series), the series has improved (for a short time I thought the storylines had dipped and the murder mysteries weren't as memorable (this included the motives of the killers).

"Happy Families" had your classic murder mystery set-up,
[Show spoiler]a group of people stuck in a country mansion with a killer among them. The location where they were stuck (and isolated), could only be accessed/got to by chain ferry. Thought the story was written and structured well. I didn't figure out who the murderer was, and the what caused them to kill was written well (yes, that sort of motive has been done before, not just on Midsomer Murders but on other shows as well, but I didn't mind).
Hopefully it's not too long before we get the remaining three episodes of the current series.

United Kingdom Series 22 continues

Haven't read it yet on Geektown, but have been reliably informed, as well as doing a web search for the news, that Series 22 continues with the first showing on ITV (don't know about streaming and Britbox) of the fourth episode "The Scarecrow Murders" on Sunday 29th May.

Don't know yet if all three remaining episodes from Midsomer Murders' 22nd series/season are going to be shown together, or if they'll appear randomly in ITV's schedules.

Have also heard recently that apparently a documentary about Midsomer Murders' 25th anniversary is in the works with John Nettles presenting it.

Have read nothing yet about whether ITV have ordered a 23rd series of the show.
