I never thought we'd get this in the US. I was tempted to get the set from Spain a few times, but procrastinated, and it went up in price.

This is awesome news but I'm cringing at the thought of one huge box set.

Although maybe it wouldn't be that insanely expensive. Prime Suspect clocked in at about 26 hours. This would be roughly double that?

That might be pretty doable.

Aspect ratio tinkering would be a deal breaker though. MPI seems pretty respectful of their properties but this is always in the back of my mind when TV releases are in play.

It's about 43 hours or so. That's the runtime for the Complete Granada DVD collection, also released by MPI. It will likely cost a ton

Yeah, street price around $150 is probably the lower end of realistic (and that might even take a while).

And even for a cheap bastard like me $150 would be hard to say no to. These are really good (if you like period piece, literal adaptations, anyway).

I have the set from Spain. It's region free. Great picture quality on some episodes, less so on others. But it's head and shoulders above the DVDs (which I also have). There is one error on the Spain blu-ray set. In The Sign of the Four, there's a boat chase at the end that was supposed to be shot day for night. But not all the shots were color corrected. But it isn't as bad as it sounds.

I would think that MPI wont be the only one involved in this effort, now that itv owns the original Granada series. Though that ivt has a distribution deal with another vendor for north American releases, but will wait to see what happens with this

Oooh, this is something I'm insanely happy about; I absolutely loved that series when it first aired. I still have my UK DVD box-set on the shelf. It makes me sad to see how ill Brett looked towards the end, though.

Crossed fingers I can get it fairly cheap.

It's not just the boat chase, there are quite a few scenes throughout the episode that were shot during the day but were meant to be at night, compared it to my DVD after watching it as I was sure something was off.

I wonder if the US set will have the episode 'The Three Gables' in HD as it's an upscale on the Spanish disc, heard it was due to the original film being lost and giving the episodes more room to breath wouldn't be a bad thing and some lossless audio would be nice too.

Great!

Is there some reason you expect AR tinkering Octagon? I wouldn't have thought anything in this series was broadcast in widescreen .

I think we was worried they might crop them from their OAR to 16:9 as seems to be the current trend with certain studios.

For the record though the last series aired in 14:9 but on the Spanish BDs this has been opened up to 16:9 and looks fantastic well except for the cropped intro sequence.

Broadcasters like 16:9 and rights holders sometimes try to accommodate that.

There's no real reason to expect MPI to play around with this but like I said, it's always in the back of my mind when I read about a TV release. Shows that were created well before the advent of widescreen televisions should be more immune to that kind of tinkering but that's not always the case.

But again, it was just something in the back of my mind. I probably shouldn't have even mentioned it.

ITV showed "The Sig of Four" a while back in HD and it was OAR. I imagine it will probably be the same transfer for the Blu-Ray. I will be importing this.

Naw, I'm glad you did. I'd completely forgotten that the "instant wide-screen" crops happen.
