Arrow Grayskull: The Masters of the Universe

Possible move from Warner Bros. to Columbia Pictures?

Quote:
Earlier this month Warner Bros completely dropped the development of the live action He-Man adaptation Grayskull: The Masters of the Universe, despite Justin Marks’ screenplay gaining big traction from internet buzz and Kung-Fu Panda director John Stevenson signing on to direct. Heatvision is now reporting that the project might not be completely dead after all.

Apparently Columbia Pictures / Escape Artists are in negotiations to pick up rights to the Mattel property. Stevenson and Marks are both no longer involved with the project, which will be developed from the ground up.

Marks script, which was described as “Lord of the Rings meets The Matrix meets Batman Begins”, was enough to get us excited about the project - we even listed off five reasons the movie could actually be cool. And lets face it, “cool” is not even in the first 50 words that would normally come to mind when thinking about a He-Man movie.

Now that the project is starting fresh with no writing talent officially attached, who knows what shape it might take. That said, I think I’m more excited to see how this plays out than any potential Conan reboot/remake.

The He-Man and the Masters of the Universe toy line spawned the popular animated series ran from 1983 to 1985. They later created a 1990 futuristic sci-fi cartoon, a 2002 remake, and a horrible 1987 live action film which stared Dolph Lundgren.

For those of you who don’t remember the series, Adam, the Prince of Eternia, possesses a magic sword, and when he holds it aloft and says the magic words “By the power of Grayskull… I HAVE THE POWER!” he is transformed into He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. A brave blond muscleman in a baldric and loincloth, He-Man battles against Skeletor’s repeated attempts and failures to enter Castle Grayskull.

If it never gets here, it'll be too soon.

Some things translate well from cartoon to live action.

I'm afraid He-man doesn't seem to be one of them, it's a pity they didn't learn that lesson the first time.

This sounds good and all, but I'd rather see a live-action Thundercats first; since He-Man has already been done.

"Out of the closet", and darn, I can't find any YouTube clip of "Vh-1's I Love the 80's: 1983" segment of collected "evidence" from the show:

(Prince Adam: "If only there was a way I could get Father's respect without having to reveal my secret...")

He-Man Movie Update

Quote:
Sony Vice President DeVon Franklin reveals that plans for a Masters Of The Universe movie are still very much on, and says they should have the script "very soon"..
This one has been on again off again more times than I can count, but there hasn't been any word it since a last April when we heard Alex Litvak and Michael Finch were brought on to pen the script. Now, while talking to Crosswalk.com Sony vice pres DeVon Franlin offers the following update..

"One of other things I'm really excited about is we're doing a reboot of the 1980s franchise Masters of the Universe. The He-Man franchise. Very excited about that. Should have that script very soon. I'm praying that we can start figuring out how we're going to make it."

Of course, we have seen He-Man on the big screen before when Dolph Lundgren brought him to "life" in the ridiculous 80's flick. The last we heard, the direction that this movie was going to take saw the concept "re-worked" and was going to be about a soldier named Adam that stumbles into (Narnia style i would assume) the magical world of Eternia were the evil Skeletor is trying to eradicate all magic. Now I have no idea if that will still be the premise now that new screen writers have been brought on. I certainly hope not anyway.
Sorry if this is the wrong He Man movie thread.

the first one was awesome! aside from Gwildor (and he wasnt that bad) it was a great 80s film the production was pretty sweet too when i watched it again i was concerned id finally realize how low-budget it was (since i last saw it as a kid) but no it held up after all these years!

id love to see it on Blu

Bill Conti's fantastic score was also great.

As for that plotline mentioned earlier, that was ditched a long while back (before the movie was renamed Grayskull). The Grayskull script (which was an epic adventure story about Adam avenging his father's death at the hands of his uncle and earning the right to become He-Man) sounded fantastic but Mattel nixed it because they wanted something more childish.
