I'll wait for the Series 13 set, no doubt it'll be included in the UK. Curious if they'll have any extras of worth.

Is that Captain Jack on the cover?

I'd rather have Clara.

Agreed! I know Resolution wasn’t actually included in the US S12 Blu set, but it was in the UK set, which is what I bought, so I’m planning on doing the same thing with S13.

Yep! He’s been confirmed as part of the cast for it (trailer here, if you haven’t seen it).

Curiously the first trailer focuses on Jack and the sidekicks, selling itas a Captain Jack show and sidelining the nominal star of the show almost completely. Which may be a reaction to the constantly falling ratings.

I'm curious if the Doc is out of the episode for most of it or if it's a trailer thing. The entire thing was shot last year, so they don't have that much wiggle room I assume in giving Barrowman a larger role due to ratings. It'll be an interesting watch.

Errr... no. Doctor Who fans are obsessed with TV ratings and continually misunderstand that the way people watch TV has changed considerably.

BBC care more about streaming figures on iPlayer than they do about overnight TV viewing figures as less and less people are watching TV dramas live. This is why so many BBC dramas are dropping all their episodes on iPlayer immediately after the broadcast of the first episode and, IMO, it's not going to be too long until Doctor Who does the same. This is how most people are watching TV dramas now; almost entirely on streaming/catch-up/on-demand services whenever they want. Especially younger audiences who are used to being able to watch shows they like at a time convenient to them thanks to the streaming boom, and as Doctor Who is a show that caters heavily to younger viewers, then a ratings fall is to be expected. The show is still as popular as ever, but audiences are watching it when they want to watch it, not when it's going out live.

Jodie having a smaller role in this special probably means she was off filming another episode at the same time or was having some time off. This happened all the time in the David Tennant/Matt Smith eras. In Series 6 for example, the Doctor has a reduced role in The Girl Who Waited while Amy and Rory only cameo in Closing Time. This is because both episodes were filmed at the same time.

Besides, this is a 70 minute special. The 'Doctor in prison' scenes may only last for the first half hour or so; still a decent chunk of screen time, but not the whole episode.

They are not selling the episode as the "Captain jack" show. The Doctor is still the most prominent character in the marketing; she opens and closes the trailer and is the largest character on the poster.

I stand by that the Doctor in prison will last at most the first 40 minutes. Enough time for Jack and the Fam to have time to face the Daleks without her, but still enough time for the Doctor to swoop in and get a decent chunk of screen time.

IMO, the special will cover a long period of time (several months) and the Doctor in prison scenes will be used to help convey this passage of time.

That argument really doesn't work. The last season lost 1.1m overnight viewers between first episode and season finale but lost 2.2m accumulated viewers (streaming, repeats, etc) over the same period.

13's tenure started with 8.2m overnight and 10.96m accumulated viewers and is now considerably less than half that with a consistent loss of viewers by any metric.

But again, overnight tv viewing figures are not the be all end all. Likewise, the accumulated figures only count the first month. They don’t count how many people binged the whole series once the finale aired.

Not to beat a dead horse but the BBC i-Player viewing figures haven't be that great either.

Wow wow wow, since when have you started agreeing with me Aclea? That's not like you.

Question: how do you decide whether to keep a series going if overnight figures do not matter? I mean that's a risky move to wait ten to thirteen weeks for a drama to be shown before deciding whether it should continue for another year. Confused.
