Thumbs up PlayStation3 hands-on preview (with video!)

We got a brief shred of playtime back at E3 this year, but Sony was kind enough to invite us down to SCEA HQ in beautiful Foster City for a little one on one with some PlayStation3s and execs. We shot some video (yes, us) and have a some notes on the hardware after the break, so check it out!

Kick ass piece of news - SACD logo is on that side view.

What a beautiful looking console eh?

My 360 is seriously going to get an inferiority complex sitting next to this work of art. Well, now that I think about it, I won't put them too close to each other...I don't want my 360 to overheat the PS3

That thing will sell based on style alone!

Things have come a long way in game console land. Much more sophisticated.

It will be interesting to see if it was the right choice.

I want one! That black glossy finish will go perfect with my entertainment system. Good bye Atari 2600, hello PS3.

Be sure to buy the Intercooler for your PS3. It looks like the PS3 might have some serious overheating problems as well. It never hurts to be careful.

the power supply is inside, not like the 360 that has the power brick outside. It does seem to have a decent ammount of ventilation. I heard mixed t hings about the intercooler for the 360. Something along the lines of it being not good for the console.

Um I would definitely hold off on buying that Intercooler. They sell those things for the Xbox 360 and there have been no reports that it helps at all and it may actually harm your system.

I've been running mine for quite some time and no problems whatsoever. The System does seem to operate a lot cooler than it did before. I know someone makes a nice Liquid cooling kit for the 360 but it cost some serious $$$. It would be nice to see companies like Sony or Microsoft incorporate liquid cooling into their systems in the future.

I think it's smarter to use a simple technic to figure out if the PS3 needs some sort of help in the cooling department. Get one of those temperature strips and stick it on the PS3. Note how hot it gets just when you turn it on, when you've been playing games for a few hours and when it's playing BDs.

From all the early preview reports of about 3-4 hours of playing/testing noted that the review unit was "warm" but not "hot" and certainly still quiet as when it started. So immediately buying a cooling device for the PS3 would be foolish.

Yes it would be foolish - not to mention that it looks like over 50% of the surface of the PS3 is ventilated, no doubt in all the right spots.
