Man....I really like Alejandro Amenábar and I think he's immensely talented. Unfortunately for him, he's not a prolific director so it's easy for people to forget about him. And if you make a dud, it's more prominent on your resume since there is big gap before and after it. Once this film is ready, he would've made only one film in the 10 years preceding it - Regression.

For those who know him only as the director of The Others, his earlier Spanish films are fantastic and definitely worth seeking.

Yeah, I was afraid he'd take half a decade to make another movie after Regression.

I was quite surprised about this new movie. I hadn't seen any news in English or Portuguese-language film sites about it. I randomly checked his IMDb page today and there it was. It's like you said: he takes a long time to make a movie, his last one was a dud, so news of his upcoming project made no waves outside of Spain.

And Agora barely registered in the US. A film that's challenging for 90% of the average movie-watching population.

I believe whatever distributor acquires it will do a limited release, provided that it doesn't utterly bomb in Spain or gets scathing reviews. Amenábar is not involved in any sexual abuse scandals like Polanski, whose last film still hasn't seen the light of day in the U.S.
