Disneyland Attraction Tower of Terror Being Turned into a Film

Because originality is now dead and buried in Hollywood, Disney is turning another of its theme park attractions into a film, reports The Tracking Board.

Tower of Terror is based on “The Twilight Zone,” although that connection will likely need to be dropped for the film due to copyright restrictions. In addition to a roller-coaster, guests can also enter the creepy hotel at the Disneyland attraction, which, naturally, is haunted.

It was actually adapted into a made-for-TV movie in 1997. A theatrical film was announced in 2009, but nothing came of it until screenwriter John August, known for his collaborations with Tim Burton, pitched an idea that Disney couldn’t refuse, although he won’t be writing the script. Producer Jim Whitaker, known for American Gangster and Robin Hood, will produce via his company Whitaker Entertainment.

After the huge success of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, it comes as no surprise that the folks at Disney are trying to turn another of their iconic attractions into a movie. Let’s just hope that this ends up more like POTC and less like The Haunted Mansion.

Scarlett Johansson to Produce and Star in 'Tower of Terror' Movie for Disney

Two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson will produce Disney's Tower of Terror movie, which will be developed as a starring vehicle for the studio's Black Widow actress, Collider has exclusively learned.

Toy Story 4 director and Inside Out scribe Josh Cooley is currently writing the script, though plot details are being kept under wraps somewhere on the tower's top floor. Johansson will produce via her company These Pictures alongside Jonathan Lia, and though there's no director formally attached yet, Disney will aim high, according to sources -- especially since Johansson is coming off of dual Oscar nominations for her stellar work in Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit in addition to her high-profile turn in Marvel's Black Widow.-Source

With her track record, I eagerly await the announcement where they say ScarJo is playing the elevator.

Man, between this and Haunted Mansion, two of my favorite rides are getting movie adaptations. Glad to see Disney embrace the spoops. I rewatched the original Tower of Terror last Halloween, and it didn't hold up as much as I'd hoped, but it was still innocent and fun. I hope they take the opportunity to expand the lore a bit and add more scares to the tower than just the elevator. Have the entire hotel be cursed/haunted. The ride always struck me as a more adult, yet more simplified version of Haunted Mansion anyway.
