Amazon listing this as coming from Sony, but previously has been released by Film4 and reported that BFI would be releasing a Dual Format Edition later this year (they've been licensing Film4 titles a lot lately).
So who's actually releasing it? Is the Amazon listing incorrect? Makes more sense that it'd be a Dual Format Edition from BFI...right? |

It was always my understanding that it was coming from BFI. I hope whoever releases it fixes the errors from the Cohen release. As it stands you either have the option of watching it with the correct gamma in the cropped aspect ratio or in the correct aspect ratio with incorrect washed out gamma. Granted, it's not that bad, but since they went to the trouble to restore it, it seems a bit of a waste.

Sony U.K. will be releasing the newly 4K remastered Blu-ray on November 27. While this disc might share similar characteristics (A/V quality). However, one can expect superior encoding and proper aspect ratio on this release. |

This is one of my favourite films but I already have the Cohen re-release with the corrected aspect ratio so I'll wait to see what extras this UK release will have and also for some reviews regarding the transfer.

I certainly hope so, wonderful film, one of the best, I was tempted to get the Cohen, but I like the colors and blacks more in the first pressing where the image was slightly cropped, which by the way, I saw some comparisson caps and in my opinion is not that bad.

Its kind of paradoxical that BFI restoration is being released by Cohen Media(Sony Pictures as in Amz??) .Not sure what prompted BFI not to release this on its own .When the listing first appeared on Amz,I hoped that artwork would be similar to that of another Merchant Ivory film 'The Remains of the Day (1993)' on Sony and partly this is why I initially believed this would be released by Sony but now it is confusing.
![]() I guess this would be a 2BD edition (2nd disc will be special features like that of US one) but this won't be same as Cohen media's 2016 release because its a new 4k restoration by BFI. You can notice the differences on the official trailer released by BFI if you compare to Cohen's. Notable differences are 1. Aspect ratio [BFI one shows more details and I believe this is in its OAR now] 2. Contrast/Gamma correction We only get to know when we have the disc with us or perhaps when it is officially reviewed here or elsewhere. Cohen vs BFI [Show spoiler] More Cohen vs BFI comparison (screen grabs from trailers)- [Show spoiler] EDIT; 10/29/2017 BFI confirmed that this release is from Cohen's restoration so please ignore the above details on PQ comparison. Howards End was not restored by the BFI, they released Cohen's 4K restoration. I went to see it at BFI Southbank and I assure you the Cohen Blu-ray looks exactly like the theatrical presentation.

I was very confused at first and I thought this was the same Cohen's 2016 restoration but two of the articles I read pointed otherwise that 'new 4k restoration by BFI' and one of them was Curzonblog and then this review -LINK
I have contacted BFI on their FB and through email to clear this confusion ![]() |

The Curzon blog says: "The film’s new 4K restoration was completed by Cineric Portugal from the original camera negative and magnetic soundtrack held in the archive of the George Eastman Museum. Colour grading was by Deluxe Restoration (London) under the supervision of cinematographer Tony Pierce‐Roberts and director James Ivory. It premiered in Cannes Classics at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, attended by James Ivory and Vanessa Redgrave."
Honestly, the BFI released Cohen's new restoration. That is why the Cohen logo is on the posters. However, I am sure the BFI will clarify. Regardless, the restoration is amazing. You will not be disappointed by this release. ![]() |

It's Cohen via Sony DADC, similar to what Criterion are doing with their UK output. There was some confusion because BFI released the film theatrically with Cohen as partners, and there was talk of them releasing a Dual Format Edition later this year (supposedly in the Summer). Then a listing appeared mentioning Sony as the distributors, but now it looks like it's a direct port of the Cohen release (i.e. 2 discs + booklet).
However, there's no talk (i.e. press releases) confirming a full-scale Cohen launch in the UK - we only found out it was Cohen when the pack shots appeared on Zoom and Amazon. My suspicion is that they'll just release the Merchant Ivory films, and continue to license other titles to Eureka, BFI and Arrow. I suspect there was a bit of complication with rights, with Sony having a say, and they'd rather just port the Cohen release than license it to a third party like BFI. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though! Wouldn't mind UK editions of Kiarostami's The Wind Will Carry Us, Melville's Two Men in Manhattan, Buñuel's Tristana, Clément's The Damned, or Miller's Sudden Fear. Wouldn't mind the Chabrol and Sirk titles either (more Pialat on UK Blu-ray seems unlikely after MoC's aborted attempt). |

So it is! Slipped my mind for a sec.
Also last I checked, AE had the rights to The Wind Will Carry Us and probably never let them go. Never say never though! Would love to see a different label get that, if only so we finally get some more Kiarostami on UK Blu-ray. |
