Exclamation The end is closer than we think?

According to this, they have cancelled the HD DVD promotion group press conference to re-evaluate the impact WB's decision has on HD DVD and the success of any HDM format.
I think they might realize that this move is a power move to give Blu-ray the momentum needed to win. The fact is, RIGHT NOW HD DVD can do NOTHING but take money away from the winning format, and delay the success of any HDM format.
They just might, MIGHT, decide that it really and truly is best for the entire industry to give up.
Now it will be a while before it happens, but this might be the first step. All they are going to do now is get in the way of the victory of HDM. DVD is our biggest challenge, and HD DVD can only get in the way.

I agree with CptGreedle. If they were really concerned with the outcome of optical high def, they would lay down their arms. Resistance is futile. DVD is the real target for us to set our sites on. So, right now, we're sitting at, what?

I agree!!

It's obvious that the HD DVD association is guaging how universal and paramount feel right now.

Warners statement that the format war is truly creating confusion and delaying adoption is 100% correct and I think we will see the white flag soon.

THere is NOTHING left for Toshiba to due as they've shot their wad already.

What more of a positive pres event for BOTH sides to show unity and declare Blu the format at CES now?

In a perfect world that would happen, but I doubt it actually will happen. Hopefully by the end of Q1 everything will be much more "blu."

I think things are going to move VERY VERY fast. No HD-DVD at CES tells all. At this point, I would assume Paramount and Universal are discussing options. Toshiba may even be seeking ways to get into the game. MS...well who cares about them.

A huge cheer would go up if Paramount, Universal, and Toshiba just threw in the towel.

"Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, we have decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference scheduled for Sunday, January 6th at 8:30 p.m. in the Wynn Hotel. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD’s commitment to quality and affordability – a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on new developments around HD DVD".

The consumer has spoken and does not want your format. Why did new line and warner side with bluray idoits

Remember recently M$ combining the HD DVD division with 2 other divisions? I do and I also recall thinking M$ knows this is a losing battle and will give it up soon. I really think this will all end soon and not make it past the end of June. The only thing Toshiba and M$ can do at this point is lose less money.

The best thing MS can do now is to look at offering an add on blu-ray player for the Xbox360. Let's hope they weren't about to announce a new 360 with built in hd-dvd!!! If they were, I bet that plan has quickly been scrapped...

The elite does not have an internal HD DVD drive. That's why many HD DVD fans were painting their add-on drive black so it matched their console.

I know Universal has toured Blu-ray replication plants on more than one occasion so they might be open to switching now. Paramount was pissed at the switch from what some users have said here (which makes sense). I think they are kicking themselves for taking the bag of cash right now.

The elite added an HDMI port, but it still only has a DVD drive. If owners of the elite wanted to watch HD DVD they had to buy the add-on. It was rumored that MS would release a new edition of the X360 with a HD DVD drive that would replace the existing elite model.

What will "we" all do in the "end". Will it be like the "end" of a book and be shut? Or will it be like the "end" of the officers that assulted Rodney King trial ? Will it be like the "end" of New Orleans ?
I'm not sure but some seem almost fanatical.

Will it be like the "end" of VHS tapes ? Will we have bargin bins full of .50 dvd's ?

Will hd-dvd gain a underground cult like following that convert 1080i signals from their sattelite and burn them to hd-dvd then sale at china town or your local flea market.

With China already produceing cheap garbage will they just continue, and become the worlds hd-dvd refuge ?

I dont know , but I just bought my ps3 and I was never worried from the first trailer I saw.

When blu-ray dvd's first came out was there that much difference in quality?
I can't imagine thinking that they would not be the succesor to standard def dvd.

The difference in quality between HD DVD and Blu-ray is not as big as some would like to think honestly. Both support the same codecs, the sale 1080p signals, etc. However the differences lie elsewhere, with things like capacity, bandwidth, support, marketing, etc.
YES Blu-ray can support better quality than HD DVD, for 2 reasons. More capacity for lower compression of video and audio.

ANYWHO....
The way I see it, HD DVD will be more Beta Max eventually. Everyone will look back at this and call it the worst format war in history. Few people still own/use Beta Max players, and likewise, eventually people will be using Blu-ray and not HD DVD or even DVD players. DVD will be an old format that can still be run, HD DVD will be the old failed format that only a few people can watch (although I think more than Beta Max since the war lasted so long that so many people bought one).

It had to be delayed because instead of a cocktail party it's now a cangle light vigil.
