Just curious because...
https://www.gamerankings.com/browse....etter=&search= Look at all those highly-rated games. I don't own a PS4, but I'm just curious what owners actually think. Is it the best console ever? It clearly won the console wars this generation. Xbox One and Switch has nowhere near at all the amount of highly-rated games. |

You know exactly what I meant.
As a console, the PS4 should have had a 4K drive and CD Playback out of the box....you know it and I know it....we all know it. Hell, if the console it replaced could play CD's. Last edited by Blu Lemmy; 06-10-2019 at 09:37 AM. |

Regarding CD playback, in this age of streaming and digital playback you might as well complain that PS4 doesnt play vinyl or VHS. A console is judged by its library of games. That's ALL that matters in the end. Everything else is window dressing. |

Based on games on that site? PS2 has way more higher rated games than the PS4 lol
If you go by all formats the highest rated games are all from Nintendo. The highest rated PS4 game exclusive is God of War and that's all the way over on Page 2. It's all way too subjective to call something the best console. Everyone is going to have their own opinion. |

The questions subjective and tbh, i think as gamers we need to celebrate gaming as a whole right now. It's amazing how far we have come along in the last 10 years and people are mpre than ever even able to make careers out of gaming. Twitch streaming, competitive tournaments etc. Even in game tournaments offering money.
Tbh, i think we alsl have got such great tech our gaming experiences can be so broad and large. Creativity is becoming more of the limit than the hardware. It's a good time to be a gamer. That's what i'm celebrating right now. I'll just signal funeral bells when digital fully arrives ![]() |

No worries
I think the problem was actually with my initial response which was written in a rush. In short, it's too broad a question to answer....we all have different opinions. We could whip out sales figures....but a great selling console shouldn't make it the greatest |

I’ll go ahead and put my vote in for the Atari VCS.
The leap in quality from the Odyssey to the VCS was the most substantial to date. Multiple types of controllers to play a wide variety of games. Built-in difficulty switch on the console. No updates necessary and super easy to hook up and play. Lasted about 8-10 years depending on how soon you went “next gen”. |

Regarding PS4, I have loved this generation without question! However now that we are nearing the end of this generation, when I look back and take a sort of "birds eye" view of PS4, it definitely has it's flaws. The biggest thing IMO is the library of exclusives is a bit too imbalanced. The PS4 library has an absolute glut of 3rd person action/adventure games. Now for me, that's no problem whatsoever because that's my favorite genre. However I know for many that is not the case. From an exclusives standpoint, I think PS4 could stand to have some more first person games, some more racing games, some more mascot type platformers, some more JRPG's, etc. When you compare PS4's library to PS3's, the PS3 library was actually way more balanced in this regard.

PS2 or PSP are the best IMO. PS Vita was close but Sony screwed it up. PS Vita has potential but Sony just didn’t give it the respect it deserved. Plus the whole annoyance of trying to switch accounts on it and the memory sticks only could hold like 3 or 4 download games on it didn’t help either forcing you to buy the biggest size. PS2 and PSP had so many great games on it that I can’t even count high enough on how many I enjoyed. PS Vita had lots of great games but ended up as Japan-only titles.
PS4 is good but not great. Prefer PS3. |

Best console ever? Not by a long shot. Anybody claiming so doesn't have much of a history with the hobby. That may come off sounding elitist but it's true. However as Talal said it will age well.
As far as Playstation consoles go the original will always be my #1. It was just a great time for experimentation and brought gaming into the mainstream in a way we'll never quite see again. What Wipeout did for licensed music, MGS did for cinematics and FF7 did for "multimedia" can never be duplicated. If people had an idea they found a way to make it. |

You guys have me feeling regret for missing out on the PS2. Was more of a PC gamer back then, for better or for worse.
My first console of my own was the PS3. It was my gateway into Blu-Ray watching and collecting, and it was a huge step for me because I had serious doubts back then that HD formats would take off as they did. But I was floored by the gaming capabilities--the sheer complexity and detail of the games was far bigger than what I was used to. The game selection genuinely impressed and entertained me for a solid eleven years (and I was always pleased with the PS3's flexibility in playing/streaming photos, music, video). The PS4 has been pleasing. I've grown accustomed to the tile layout, but I never really used it for movie, photo, or music playback because it doesn't feel quite as intuitive or seamless (but I will admit I like the idea of using Spotify while gaming, it's just something I keep forgetting about). For games, I've been pleased with its performance and it shows how clunky and limited some older games were. I do value the ability to record game footage and take screenshots too. But going off of the game selection, it's felt like business as usual. I've probably had a bigger kick revisiting remastered games rather than new titles. Thus far, I'd give the edge to the PS3. The generational leap felt much bigger, and it's still quite the robust and flexible system. The PS4 has been great for gaming purposes, but that's been it. Even for game selection, I value the 3 more thanks to games like inFamous (1 and 2), Fallout 3, Catherine, the Bioshock trilogy, Dead Island, The Last of Us, 2013's Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3, Dragon Age 1 and 2, Oblivion and Skyrim, Borderlands 1 and 2, Assassin's Creed 2, God of War 3, and I'll have fond memories of things like LittleBigPlanet, Battlefield: Bad Company, X-Blades, Wolverine, and Wanted. And there have been plenty of small indie games--Pain, Bejeweled 3, PvZ, From Dust, Flower, Journey, Peggle, etc. What does the PS4 have? Many of my PS3 favorites remastered. Plus, 2016's Doom, the newer Wolfenstein games, Far Cry 4 and 5, inFamous: Second Son (barely), Watchdogs 1 and 2, Dragon Age: Inquisition, No Man's Sky (arguably), Tomb Raider sequels, Fallout 4 (arguably), Diablo III, Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey, aaaaaaand maybe a few more things. Lots that I love and enjoyed, but I am a little let down that most them are just long-running franchises and the gameplay has been more of the same. Any indie games I played on the 4 have been rather forgettable. Never played the Xbox (might consider the upcoming Scarlet console for its hardware), only briefly played the Wii and found it unwieldy. Retro games are charming and all, but I'm not really in love with them enough to rank them higher than modern games. |
